UEFI - Clean Install of Windows 7

hi to all and good day,

I just want to ask where can I find the boot on cd rom /usb? cause whenever I enter the BIOS setup or boot options I can't find the boot on cd rom or usb, i'm new to this UEFI boot? any tutorials on how to? please?

Follow the steps mentioned below to change the boot order in Bios:

Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo. Under” BOOT” Option ensures Boot list option is set to “Legacy”.

Now scroll down to change the Boot priority.

Hit F10 to “Save” the settings and then Exit.

thank you so much for giving me the hint on "legacy" option! at first, I don't pay attention to it cause I can't choose it cause it's unhighlightable, I keep on trying to access that legacy option, I found that: you should disable first the UEFI secure boot to access the legacy and some little more setting to fully access the legacy now I found the options: boot from cd, usb and so.. thank you so much, much appreciated!  btw, if ever I dual boot it, should I need to enable back again the UEFI secure boot after installing the second operating system? i'm planning to install windows 7 as my second operating system, I've partitioned already the drive and ready for installation. will there be a conflict in the future? AND if ever, I planned also in the future to install another OS (Xp) as my third boot OS, will there be a conflict?

I have split this thread as the Dimension E510 doesn't have a UEFI boot and it makes no sense being the single thread.

First I assume it is x64 (64 bit) you are installing as UEFI doesn't support x86 (32 bit) 

I don't have a machine I am willing to do tests on that has the UEFI BIOS thus I don't have additional UEFI instructions in my Windows Reinstallation Guide.

It appears from here that you should make some modifications in the file structure of your USB flash Drive in order to get it to boot in UEFI. Attempt following the instructions here:

I have merged the threads. You need to disable UEFI to install any 32 bit OS or legacy versions of Windows such as XP. Likely the same is true if you want Ubuntu for instance.

If you are wanting to dual boot it is recommended to disable UEFI and Secure boot. Installation should be as normal once you have done this.

As Philip Yip has correctly said, if you are trying to do a Dual boot use Secure boot and disable UEFI.

Hi mohibullah,

If the system is setup in UEFI mode, you need to manually add the option to boot from CD/DVD. However, if you wish to install Windows 7, you may simply change the Boot List Option to Legacy and you will get the desired options. You may follow the steps below :

• Power on the system
• Press F2 button on the Dell splash screen
• Highlight Boot
• Press Enter on Boot List option and change it to Legacy
• Change the 1st Boot Priority to CD/DVD drive. 
• Press F10 button to save changes and exit and press Enter on Yes

Note : Dell technical support can only support the OS shipped from the factory. But this will not impact your hardware warranty.

Please share the exact system model if you have any further questions. Will take it further from there.

I dual booted my windows 8 laptop by changing the secure boot option in the boot menu... now i am willing to change the boot settings to secure boot which was default ... is it a problem..? if so, i will leave it as the same i altered to..

Please share if you are facing any specific issues with the system. OS reinstall is an advanced step and will lead to data loss. If you are facing any particular issue, we may try diagnosing it first.

If you just wish to reset the system, you may restore the computer back to factory settings, i.e. take it to day one when you purchased the system, using Dell Backup and Recovery.

Note : This step leads to complete data loss if you select the option to Erase files in Step 11

Dell Backup and Recovery can recover the Operating system or backup from the recovery partition. To recover the OS from the recovery partition, follow these steps:

1. Plug in the AC adapter.
2. Power on the laptop. 
3. Press Windows + I to bring settings charm bar
4. Click on Power button on right hand side bottom corner of the screen.
5. Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard and click Restart from the options provided. 
6. Click Troubleshoot from the options onscreen after restart.
