UPEK Fingerprint reader on Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit editionq

Hey guys,

I just bought a new Dell Latitude D630 with a fingerprint reader. I believe I have  UPEK fingerprint reader on my system. Since I did not have any OS pre-installed, I did not have all the drivers preinstalled on my laptop. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS later on. Now, when I go to my Device Manager, I see something as "Biometric Coprocessor" with a Yellow exclamation mark. It seems I don't have drivers installed for my fingerprint reader. I tried to install the Windows Vista 32-bit drivers, but got an error that my OS does not support it. Does any one know if Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS does not support fingerprint authentication? If anyone's used it, can anyone please direct me to a place where I can download the drivers from? Thanks.

I tried installing Vista 64-bit and got the same result in device manager. After doing some searching,  it appears that Upek hasn't made 64-bit drivers yet. It looks like it's too early for 64-bit O/Ss. You'll either have to downgrade to 32-bit, or live without the reader for the time being.

Thanks, blackmetal.

I hope Upek guys come up with 64-bit drivers. It's frustrating to downgrade to 32-bit after working on a 64-bit OS.

I found that one before, and the x64 driver doesn't work (I wonder if Upek even knows that?).

Hey there,

Any idea if that could be the one?

Cool, I'll try that and let you know.

I haven't tried it myself, but it seems that 'blackmetal' has tried it and as per him, that did not work as well. But I'll surely try to see if that works or not and keep you guys posted.

I have vista x64, and the biometric, Touchchip Fingerprint Processor, driver appears installed correctly. I can't get it to operate, because I think I need software to run it. What software supports the UPEK reader. I bought a new precision M6300 with 32 bit vista installed, but the wave security software that came with it was not provided in a 64 bit version. Does Vista bit locker have a feature for running the fingerprint reader.

The driver at the UPEK website (http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp) installs fine and resolves the yellow exclamation point in the vista x64 device manager. (Windows even pops up a link to the site as a "solution." ) However, without the security suite software, there is no way to enroll finger prints or actually use the device.

Hello, I've got the same problem - the drivers from Upek are working but no application... I have got a Dell Latitude D830 with Windows Vista x64 installed. Today I've bought the Upek Protector Suite QL (http://www.upek.com/solutions/psql/default.asp) and the fingerprint reader is working really fine. I've registered my left hand as administrator and the right as normal user. Upek has a list of supported notebooks: http://www.upek.com/solutions/psql/chekpoint.asp Costs: ~20€

Lance,

Can you give me the URL from where you were able to download the drivers from UPEK's website?

Hi,
Did you actually end up buying the software from UPEK? Should Dell be providing us one since we bought a laptop from Dell?

The reason why I say Dell should provide is becuase when I went to Dell's support site to the download center, they do have UPEK software/driver for Vista 32-bit up there! And that gives me all reasons to assume that they'd provide for Vista 64-bit, too. The qestions is when?

Hi Manish,

for that price it was easier to me to buy the software directly from UPEK instead of waiting for Dell...

btw: I'm not sure whether Dell MUST deliver a software for the fingerprint reader. It's just like the smartcard reader: the driver is available but no software...

I agree 100% with your logic Manish. Do yourself a favor and go to

http://www.upek.com/solutions/psql/default.asp

And just download that. It was $14.95. It appears to have the 64bit drivers and app in there. I can't try since my Cisco VPN client won't run on x64 as much as I would love to run x64!

The 14.95 is well worth it considering how much time (and system reloads) I have spent trying to get the Dell provided software to work.

I bought the M6300 'Workstation' based on configuration description and other advertising by Dell, that implies the machine is fully supported in Vista x64. Generally, Dell provides application software for the hardware components in the system they sell to the customer, so I feel it is justified to assume Dell would provide fingerprint reader software for Vista x64. If Dell chooses not to support Vista x64 in similar fashion that they support their systems in Vista 32 bit or XP, they sould clearly state this in their advertisements.
