**URGENT** Audio Driver for dell d600 latitude windows xp pro. no audio

currently i am experiencing problems with playing audio through my dell d600 latitude laptop which is running on windows xp pro. it was working fine until i performed a windows update. i have been through the dells troubleshooting pages and still no luck. when i open windows media player or itunes i get a message saying " itunes has detected with your audio configuration. audio/video playback my not operate properly." i have tried uninstaling and reinstalling the audio driver sigmatel c-major audio but still not working. when i go to sigmatel properties it says it is enabled and the device is working properly but it has not been started.
please can someone advise me on this matter asap.

If you suspect installing a windows update caused the audio problem, then just uninstall it & reboot.

After reboot, if audio problem is now resolved, you will need to contact Dell or MS.

If audio problem has not been resolved, reinstall the windows update & post your results.

This might be a dumb question... how do you go about uninstalling a Windows update?

Hi sydnie

Just noticed your question (no such thing as dumb question, especially when it involves computers :smileyhappy:).

Most Windows updates can be Removed (some, only a few – cannot) by using the following method.

Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, check enable the Show updates box, now scroll down & select the update to be uninstalled.

If it can be removed, click the Remove button, follow the Software Update Removal Wizard

If there is no Remove button the update is Remove protected with a message “This update cannot be removed.”

Dell does not support Vista or Windows 7 on this model.  Only Windows XP and the XP drivers are not compatible.  Windows 7 will usually find and install drivers if there is anything compatible (e.g. the generic Windows HD Audio Codec) but apparently nothing compatible can be found.

If you must have sound, you best option is to reinstall Windows XP.

I assume the 32 bit Windows 7? As stated WIndows 7 isn't officially supported on your system so you may experience some issues.

If you must run Windows 7, you however you may try:

R90698.exe the Audio Driver is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista 32 bit. As it is compatible with Vista 32 bit, it will work with Windows 7 32 bit.

But first the XP Intel Chipset driver is commonly shared with the Inspiron 6400... so you may install the Vista 32 version from the 6400.

Essentially attempt to install:

R141246 Intel Chipset

• Conexant Modem, should be native to Windows 7

• R90698 Audio Driver

• Ethernet Broadcom 570x should be native to Windows 7

• Wireless Card, what one do you have, might or might not work?

R140031 Alps Touchpad

R163012 Dell Quickset

Next visit Windows Update and look to see if there is any optional hardware drivers.

After installing/attempting to install all of these, do you have any errors in the device manager?

If so try installing:

• R114084 XP O2 Micro-Driver, try installing in compatibility mode, may not be needed

• R113575 XP ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, try visiting Windows Update after installing this in compatibility mode.

Finally how much RAM does your system have?

Good luck!  "If you suspect installing a windows update caused the audio problem, then just uninstall it & reboot." - Don't be surprised if this causes even worse problems.  I've tried this approach - it is NOT guaranteed to work.  I've had to reinstall Windows updates (not related to Microsoft hardware/software) just to get back to a reasonable state.
