Upgraded Vista; No Audio period

Well I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit and ever since the ugprade finished I've had no sound.  I've tried searching the internet and messing around with my computer and from reading the forums I know I need some driver from Creative.  The problem is since I am using a laptop I am unsure of how to find out what sound card I am using and what drivings I need.

I was also find a folder named /Creative/Sound Blaster Advanced MB Drivers left over from before the upgrade, but it doesn't contain any documents that I know of that would tell me what kind of sound card I have.  Also When Vista first tried to automatically install audio drivers I received the message that it is unable to locate the basic audio stuff to upgrade.

I am running an Inspiron 1705 roughly 1 year old with the following hardware:

2.0 Ghz Intel Core Duo
1 gig ram
Geforce Go 7800

Thanks in advance for any replies offering help.

And here is some information I received off the dell website, dunno how useful it will be though:

go to the control panel and under sound see what driver is loaded if it is sigmatel uninstall it. untill they fix the creative drivers you should be using Microsoft HD Audio as a driver. If you select search internet for driver that is the one that will be installed.

By the way when you do a clean install like I did the Microsoft sound is what gets installed when I loaded the Sigmatel drivers on I lost all sound.

I had this problem even after going to Dell to install them. I had to use the original XP Sound Blaster cd that came with my computer.... I didn't even have to use the Vista drivers.

Just go to Control Panel/ Device Manager (Classic View) and you can find your soundcard listed. Or just go to Dell's my account/whatever page that is on here..... It'll tell you everything that was installed in your computer when you purchased it.

I just upgraded to vista home premium from vista basic (that my machine shipped with). i have absoltuely no audio.

the driver is current-i already walked through the steps to see that.

the little speaker on the bottom of the computer screen says " No Audio Output Device is installed"

audio was working fine before i upgraded. any information would be helpful.

Thanks for the replies, however I am still having problems. I attempted to search for the Microsoft's HD Audio driver, but I was unsuccesful in finding any driver that is downloadable. I did however discover a downloadable word documents pertaining to HD Audio, oddly enough.

And concerning the control panel device manager, which one of these would be a sound card?
SDA Standard CompliantSD Host Controller
High Definition Audio Controller
Sigma Tell High Definition Audio Codec
I attempted to update both, but no drivers/upgrades were found. It also seems possible that all sound software was somehow removed during the upgrade to vista and I may not have the sound card listed period.

Also I tried that lookup tool on the Dell website (that is what that large paragraph of random mumbo jumbo in my first post is made up of). Nothing I got out of that would indicate to me that one of those components is a soundcard. Of course I have no expertise on this subject. In addition, to further clarify, I experienced a very similar problem as the poster above this post mentioned.

Please refer to this for this specific manufacturer's sound card issue :

IDT PC Audio Informational Site for Microsoft Vista

IDT acquired the SigmaTel PC Audio products and all support for SigmaTel PC Audio is now handled by IDT.

Known Issue

  • Audio Driver stops working after upgrade to Vista (from XP to Vista, or from a base version of Vista to a more advanced version of the OS)
    • AUDIO ISSUE OVERVIEW Microsoft Vista supports upgrading an existing Windows system. During this upgrade process, previously installed audio device drivers are copied and reinstalled on the new Vista installation. This can involve upgrading from an earlier version of Windows (like XP), or from another version of Vista (e.g. Vista Home to Vista Ultimate).

During this process, a problem occurs where some of the files required for the IDT audio driver installation become inaccessible.

    • RESOLUTION This problem can be fixed by installing an updated audio driver, or by reinstalling the existing driver.

However, before doing this, the currently installed driver must be uninstalled. This process is explained below.
