Windows Update problem with Windows Genuine Advantage Notification, KB905474
This Windows Update has tried to download itself repeatedly over the past 3 weeks and fails immediatley with Error Code 0x80242006. I note in my Update History that it downloaded/installed itself early in May, so all these failing recent attempts seem to be unnecessary.
I have checked both Microsofts and Dell knowledge databases and can find no reference to either the problem or the error code. I have also looked through CNET's forum and find some similar entries but no solutions are provided. However, I do note that most of the entries relate to Dell systems so wonder if the problem is associated with Dells OEM version of Windows XP

Underpaid,
Thanks very much for your reply and help. I tried to contact Microsft too, but because my Windows XP is the OEM version they don't provide free support, so refered me to Dell, where I found nothing.
So your help was great, and like you, the instructions in red worked fine. Strange; Automatic Update and at least 8 Manual/Express attempts all failed, but the Manual/Custom method recommended in red worked first time!

Underpaid,
Thank you for posting the MS instructions. I was not getting an error code, just being offered it each time I went to Microsoft Updates. Renaming Software distribution fixed it for me.
