Windows Vista & Inspiron 1720

Question

My daughter is looking at purchasing the Inspiron 1720 with Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition . She's looking at the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7250 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache) processor with 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz. She has 1 gb memory for her current notebook that she says she can also use - so that would bring it up to 3 gb of memory.

My concern is all the problems there seems to have been with Windows Vista. She has a deluxe version of Photoshop that she uses. Will there be problems? Would she be better off looking at something with Windows XP? Or since this is a new computer - will there be fewer problems?

I have vista premium w/photoshop and no problems here.The problems are doing the upgrade to vista and not doing the homework to see if all the peripherals and software is vista compatable.And with the memory side of it,the laptop comes with 2gb memory which means it has 2 1gb sticks.In order to get 3gb she would need a 2gb stick and a 1gb stick,so what she has now will not work to get to 3gb.

that depends on what version of photoshop she has. if it's CS2, that should work. CS3 definitely works. anything lower than CS2 might be tricky - however, there are people on here that have been able to get version 7 to work. there is also the option to run the software in compatibility mode (if you right-click the application, select properties, click on the compatibility mode tab and check the option to run the software as though it was in a previous version of windows)

also, if i am correct, notebooks generally only have two slots for ram - so her 1gb would not really help as it would have 2 x 1gb sticks installed anyway.

and quite frankly, i wouldn't believe the rumours you've been hearing. myself and a lot of others here have been running vista on our machines for a while now with zero problems. you're better off going with a vista system. i have found it to be much faster and more stable than XP.

As already stated, those that upgrade have more problems than those that buy a new machine with VISTA. The issues involved with VISTA are mostly user initiated, as stated by people not doing research to ensure their peripherals and such will work with VISTA. It is a good operating system if given a chance. Are there issues, YES....sure, but go to the XP forum and look at all the problems and that's been around for 8 years...YOu would think there would be fewer problems as they are supposed to be fixed along the way.

The 1720 is a nice machine, but before purchasing new give the Dell Outlet store a check. Doesn't take long and you can get great deals. FInd out what you want and then search in the Del Outlet to see if it's available.

My wife owns a 1720 (T7300, 4MB L2 cache, 2.0GHZ) 2gig ram, 160gig HD, VISTA Premium, 8400M GT or GS can never remember, and we purchased it off the Dell Outlet store. $899. Brand new would have been around $1590....I save a lot of cash. It's a refurbished machine and I can't see anythign wrong with it. Maybe a scratch mark or two.

Eskymi has a very good point by from the outlet,that is where i get my computers from.They carry the same warranty and have been checked over more than once to make sure they are working properly.And they are discounted which helps?:smileyvery-happy:

I run photoshop 7.0 on vista, no problems. As far as I'm aware most adobe software has been approved, though I did have some problems with macromedia (whom have now been bought out by adobe)
