Windows XP 64bit on Inspiron E1505

You can install the 64 bit OS, but why would you ? 

XP 64 bit version is more problematic then the Vista 64 bit version and you would have to hunt down drivers for the hardware you have on the system.  Seems that would be just asking for trouble and not worth it in my opinion.

I appreciate your help and your answering my first question (can I use XP64 on the E1505?). But rather than debating the merits of one OS over another, what would be most helpful is any information anyone might be able to share about where I might find XP-64 drivers for the E1505.

You will need .

R171789.exe sound XP32\64 Bit from your download page

R168331.exe Ricoh from Precision m 90 or m 6300

R131033.exe modem from  Pre m90 or m65

R151519.exe wireless from Pre m20.m65,m70,m90

Ethernet from Broadcom.com as a zipped info file .

The other drivers like Video and chip set is going to be hard to find

if you can even find a driver that will work .

The chip set may come from Intel if it even works.

Then you will need a floppy drive to install it

yes it will be hard to get XP 64 bit to work on your E 1505!!

You can look at the business line of Dell computers and see if they run XP 64

then look at the hardware list and see if they have drivers for the chipset and video .

Check the XPS line also you might get luck somewhere .

•    Bluetooth® driver (if applicable)
•    Synaptics® TouchPad™ Driver
•    QuickSet utilities

I wish I could be more help on this but, unfortunately, we never shipped the E1505 with a 64-bit OS so I have never had an opportunity to deal with it set up that way.  Hopefully this will at least help you find some of the drivers you need.

For anyone that finds this looking for a 64-bit QuickSet that works on the mm061 (Inspiron 6400 / E1505, in my case), I was able to get

to install on Win7 x64.

Just to let you know, the 64 bit version of XP won't work much better than the 32 bit version of XP on this system. The chipset limits the RAM to 3.3 Gb and the upper limit for the 32 bit OS is 3.24 Gb so there is no benefit of installing XP 64 bit.

However when looking for the drivers, it is sometimes useful to look at the existing drivers (in this case the 32 bit XP drivers, looking at the compatible systems and seeing what one of they systems have 64 bit drivers, note some drivers are for the 32 and 64 bit). At quick glance I can find but would need to do some hunting for the rest.

Also note your ability to install the 64 bit OS depends on what processor you have, for example I have the T2130 in my Inspiron 6400/E1505 and so cannot install a 64 bit OS. Edit: didn't read properly, your processor is fine. 

I think if you have the T7200, T7400 or T7600 you should be good to go. If you have not already done so you can install 4 Gb of memory (2×2 Gb) and 3.24 Gb - 3.3 Gb of this will be usable.

If you can find the video drivers from the vendors websites and if the drivers from the list above work then it should be fine. (The touchpad driver isn't so important, nice to have but not critical, the 32 bit version may work). Again there is next to no advantage of running xp x64 over xp x86 on this system.

All right... I think I have all the drivers I need for full functionality in Win7 x64 now.

downloads.dell.com/.../R141208.EXE - Synaptics x64 driver got the tap-click disabled and scroll bars working.

ftp.dell.com/.../R168331.EXE - Ricoh card reader driver that everyone recommends above got rid of the last of the question marks I had in devmgmt.msc (Device Manager)...

ftp.dell.com/.../Ricoh_R5C833_A00_R240788.exe 'looks' newer, but unless I have a problem reading or writing from/to SDHC cards (which is about the only format I use in it), I'll hold off on that.

I wanted x64 mainly so I can run 64-bit versions of some programs, not because I think it's going to make my notebook run any better. I had a new blank 500GB hard drive to try it on (because Dell Support Center has popped up a couple warnings that the WD 120GB it came with is failing), so I installed MediaDirect 3 on it (I couldn't get a copy of MediaDirect 2 ANYwhere) in an extended partition, Win7 x64, the rest of MediaDirect, the Dell NSS, chipset and drivers, and everything is (apparently) working. :-)

Now I can stop and make a restore image or 2 with Clonezilla, then figure out which flavor of x64 Linux to dual boot in the 180GB I left unallocated.

I'm probably going to pull the keyboard and swap in an Atheros-based Ubiquity SR-71E because the PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4328 device wasn't fully-supported in Linux the last time I checked with a Live CD (WiFi light wouldn't light and the Dell 1500 card was not detected with lshw nor lspci).

All in all, this thread was very useful, in my honest opinion.
