Windows XP home isnt reading my disks....

Question

I'm new to the forum and i just got off the phone with dell after an hour and a half of finally realized that my hardware for my 2 disk drives are working perfectly. I have a liteon 16x dvd drive and a cdrw drive. The real problem is that xp home isnt reading the disks... i put a cd in and autoplay doesnt come up, i cant access the disks, i cant explore them, i can open them manually... nothing. I have no idea what to do, and i am not really interested in paying a fee to recieve help from dell or microsoft on this matter. Has anybody seen a problem like this before? or is there anybody who could help me understand how to fix my problem? If there is i would greatly appreciate it, and keep in mind that i have comfirmed with dell that my hardware for both disk drives are working perfectly >.>.

Go to the BIOS (F2 on boot) and make sure the drives are turned on.

I went through that with dell, they are turned on it is some problem with the software or some thing. Becuase i used my dell resource cd to do a diagnostic check and that worked, it is something wrong with windows xp i believe.

Might want to reset the BIOS and or the NVRAM to make sure there is no problem up front. Check the Forums for the NVRAM procedure. Could also do a Repair Install, which will not lose any programs/data. Unfortunately you can't back up important data first without the drives.

Try a few different disks. Those that you are trying to read might be bad. In the case of DVD's, if they were made on a diff computer, they might not have been finalized for use on other computers. You can also go to Computer Management, Disk Management in Administrative Tools to check the drives. Have the drives ever worked? Message Edited by Mary G on 04-12-200611:21 PM

It seems that the problem is with your xp home edition . check that the driver is installed or not. go device manager and check for the driver update the driver for cd rw or rollback the driver. still problem persist then try with recovry console Message Edited by vaibhav.shirke on 04-12-200611:51 PM

How do i roll back the driver? and woudl recovery change a lot of things?

O and the drives have been working great up to now, ive had my computer since june 2002, and it has always worked great >.>. I was wondering if i should just pay the fee service support to try to get it fixed?

Ok... I just fixed my own problem....  I went into control panel... i saw an icon that said Disk Detector.. i clicked on it and there was a little box unchecked that said whether or not to automatically detect a disk.. i checked the box clicked ok and my computer now can read disks... how stupid is that? well thanks for all ur help
