XPS 720 Windows Media Player after mobo upgrade

Question

My upgrade seemed to go flawlessly until it came time to watch a video on Windows Media Player. As part of the upgrade I reinstalled Windows Vista Home premium edition. No picture in Player! The sound works.

After reading the MS Windows Media Player forum and this forum I phoned Dell's technical support. We reinstalled the video driver no luck. We tried a few switches in options. We tried reinstalling the Windows upgrades related to player. There is a work around I can view videos using Windows Media Center. Apparently I am not the only one with this problem. The final suggestion was to reinstall Vista?

Anyone in this forum have a suggestion? I was surprised that you can't uninstall/install Windows Media Player in Vista?

It's part of the OS. You probably need these:   http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Vista_Codec_Package.htm

Thanks for the suggestion but my computer won't let me download the codecs.  I get errors 1402 and 1406 all to do with user account control.  When I remove all user account control and try to load as administrator same errors occur.   I've tried to change permissions in the registry but to no avail.  I'm a bit nervous about fooling around with the registry.
