installing windows 2000 on a system that came with vista

Absolutly, I don't know why you would want to go back that far but, just pop your disk in, restart, to the boot menu, and set your machine to boot from cd-rom. 2000 should install, when you get to the screen that askes where you want to install windows, delete your partition, do a quick format, and 2000 should go right in.

Check with HP first about voiding your warranty. IMO, it would be foolish to install an obsolete OS on a new computer. Drivers will be a nightmare, so be sure to find them all--if you can--& put on cd first. Better to educate yourself about Vista and stick with that.

I agree with Mary G.  Although I still have a few lingering driver issues, I LOVE Vista. Cannot imagine stepping back to the less-than-stellar OS Windows ME...my cousin in IT management removes 2000 from any friends' pc as a standard practice. Be a little patient and learn Vista, it's far more user friendly and has MANY little fixes that speed up the computing experience. Improved search, UI, and fixes for dozens of little annoyances that we have all tolerated for so long we don't even realize them. The new sleep mode is GREAT. Gadget sidebar very helpful, this list could go on for many pages. Less program hangs, shutdown problems... best OS I have ever used...

You would be better off to install XP. You are more likely to be able to get hardware drivers for XP than 2000 on a new machine. Before you nuke vista make sure there are drivers available for the OS you intend to install. The majority of the hardware being sold today was being shipped with XP last january so XP drivers should be on the manufacturers website. You will also need a codec to play DVD video on all previous versions of windows since microsoft did not write it into the OS.
