ms-dos on reboot

I can not get to ms-dos during reboot to change my bios. The only option that I see is startin safe mode with command prompt, but it does take me to dos. Ideas?

If your computer has a floppy drive, you will need to make a ms-dos startup disk. go to my computer, right click the floppy drive and select format from the context menu, then put a check in create ms-dos startup disk.
If not you can use a windows 98 cd to boot the computer to dos, if you have one or can get someone to loan you one.

mph68,

You do not need MS-DOS to access your BIOS to change it. See this.

ok. I made the dos diskette. It comes up with A:\ prompt. How do I run a program on the C drive from there? This is as per the bios update that I must run the program from the dos mode.

Most Dell BIOS upgrades have a downloadable file that when run from within Windows creates a DOS bootable floppy disk.  When you boot from that floppy disk it automatically updates the BIOS.  Which model computer do you have?  If you tell us, we can point you to the correct file to download.

Unfortunately, the older BIOS upgrade programs for your system do not have a packaged version that creates the DOS bootable disk.  You will have to use another computer to create a DOS bootable floppy disk or DOS bootable CD.  Copy the downloaded file to the DOS bootable floppy or CD, boot from this floppy or CD and run it from there.  The file for version A07 is at:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_CEL_2400&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=3597

Note that since you have Windows XP you cannot boot to DOS without the DOS bootable floppy or CD and once in DOS you cannot run anything from your hard drive, since DOS not recognize the NTFS file system used by Windows XP.

I have an optiplex gx1. I upgraded to the a10 bios, but it does not support a processor over 600m. I installed a 450m processor to run the computer, but it does not recognize my dvd player or my cd burner. I need to change the bios back to the a07. I have it downloaded to my c drive, but it says that I must run the program in dos mode.
