need administrator password for recovery console

Windows won't start and I get a message saying the following file is corrupt or missing: windows\system\vgaoem.fon. It suggests I try to repair my windows installation. When I try this it asks me for an administrator password. I have never set a password on this computer to log onto windows with. If I leave it blank and just hit enter, the c prompt just comes back up looking like this: c:/windows>  I have an inspiron 5150 , XP sp2, 512mb ram

Can you help?

Thanks

Tom

TomC57,

That prompt is what you should see when you enter Recovery Console (the system has accepted the blank Administrator password). The procedure in byker49's link will allow you to correct the problem.

Never mind, I'm an idiot, the syntax was wrong.  Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the responses.  When I follow the directions specified, I get the following message:

The system cannot find the file or directory specified.

I am positive the syntax and spelling is right, any other ideas?

Tom
