reinstalling xp on dimension 2400/ need partition help

Question

I have a Demension 2400 and I wanted to take my computer down to preshiped condition. my computer was bought before 7-04  (actually 3-04). i put in the operating system CD and all was fine untill I had a partition choice, I think i choose C and it said there was another operating system on it and  it would overwrite everything ( I thought thats was what i should do to get rid of it) eveything seemed to work , I did the resource CD and  got on line . Now it pops up that i have no disk space at all  and i cant install anything. Im sure its the partition thing. Which should I choose and should I just start over with the Operating Systems CD? If I could get step by step partition help I would be so happy. thank you in advance for any help Also I was never prompted to put in my product key.

thank you so much !! I will do that .one more question when I create a new partition C , will that be in the list ?  or do I have to name it myself? I just want to make sure I do this right next time . thanks again !

'will that be in the list ?  or do I have to name it myself? '   After you delete the C partition you will see an new 'unpartitioned space' , select that to create the new partition on.   It will prompt you to press C when creating the new partition.   Read carefully and follow the prompts.   Here is a screen shot after the C partition is deleted., yours may look a little different, this is where you press C, be sure 'Unpartitioned space' is highlighted before hitting C key.       Just hit enter on this screen, dont make any changes to the default size     Message Edited by mombodog on 09-22-2007 08:00 PM

When you get to the point during the XP installation (choosing partitions) you need to delete the largest partition (usually is C) then create New C partition, then install XP on the new partition.   This is what is callled a clean Install, you did what is called a dirty (overlay) install, start over, try again. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp   'Also I was never prompted to put in my product key.'    I will not, if you use the Dell XP CD.

When you carry out a clean reinstall of XP, you must remember to delete the existing C:/ partition when you are prompted, then recreate the partition and format, following by installing XP.

You are welcome, intimidating when you do it the first few times.   Reminds me of that TV commercial (Geico?) where the guy is sitting in his house talking on the phone to his surgeon.
