What processes are running when you initiate the shutdown?  What programs do you still have open?  Windows will need to terminate those processes/close programs before shutting down.

nothing out of the norm, word, internet, games, different most times.

Then in the absence of any other symptoms of illness, I would suggest that is likely the cause.  The varying times would equate to the various things you have open at various shutdowns.

A test would be to close everything first, then shutdown and see if the shutdown time is consistent under that condition.

At the moment you are comparing apples to pears to bananas, if you see what I mean.

This is my last post for the night - I am off to bed now (just so you know I am not ignoring you later!).

You should always close all open programs before shutting down to prevent Registry & file corruption. There should be nothing running in the Task Bar when you shut down. Word especially should be closed, as well as Internet Explorer.

Good suggestion sparkenh. It was right at a time that I installed this great little application, along with uninstalling a pre-loaded program that my shut-down problems disappeared. I wish I could remember which one it was, there were so many!. Something tells me it was the Installshield Update Manager.
