I would recommend uninstalling Mcafee and installing a more stable AntiVirus program such as PC-Cillin or Norton antivirus. Go to control Panel ADD/Remove programs and uninstall McAfee.

First thank you for your time/response.  ?-is norton antivirus also a firewall?  uncomputer savvy that I am my understanding if one has internet connection via a TV cable company (which I do) it is most important to have a firewall installed.  I just bought this dell notebook - came from a 1995 gateway computer with windows 05.  So when I saw that dell offered mcafee security with virsus scan and firewall I thought this would be an option to get - did get.

again    thank you

I was helping someone else with McAfee a while ago.  It took some work to get it to work almost correctly.  If you want to keep McAfee, contact McAfee Support with the problem:

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/contactoptions.asp?usedPortal=True

Their 'Free Internet Chat' is the cheapest and easiest to get support.

As for the 'almost correctly' comment above; McAfee has a known conflict between the anti-virus and privacy service, which makes it impossible to send attachments.  They claim to be working on a fix.

If you switch, you can get Norton Internet Security, which includes the same features (firewall, spam filter, anti-virus, etc).  Or, you can get just another maker's anti-virus, and download a free copy of Zone Alarm for the firewall.

I followed through with your suggestion - after 2 contacts the problem is mcafee security does not allow me to send/rec emails in outlook express.  Unabling was not a help, but uninstalling allowed me to send/rec emails.  Do I have any recourse with dell I ordered my dell 11/30/03  - it was shipped 12/11/03 - today's date 1//4/04.  The mcafee was an extra charge of about $70.  My email address which they had was comast.net and it seems to me when one has tv cable internet that the person would be using outlook express for their emails.  From all the forum, mcafee chat, and comcasts cust. service rep.  that mcafee has not and still does conflict with outlook express.  I reinstalled mcafee just so I feel comfortable using internet without a big fear of hacker attack so I can educate myself on my best choices of using my computer with less fustration.     THANK YOU for your help.

You can try calling Dell, or try one of the Dell "customer care" forums.  They will likely delay, to get you out of the 30-day return window.  It's up to you on if you want to return it because of this though.

You watch the store ads, about once a month or so you can find Norton Internet Security for free (after two rebates).  One of the rebate is from an upgrade option; I think you can use your Dell installed McAfee to get the upgrade rebate, but you should confirm this - ie: I'm going from memory on if the factory installed version qualifies, and my memory isn't what it once was, so don't hold me to it :-)

I was helping my parents over Christmas, and was able to get McAfee to work with Outlook Express and their cable internet connection, and they can send/receive emails.  Like someone else said though, the anti-virus and privacy service together prevents sending email attachments.  Disabling the privacy service allowed it to send attachments, but I couldn't find an option to prevent that one portion from starting.

Thank you for your response.  As it turns out my mcafee security which has virus scan, personal firewall, and privacy service - the privacy service was not activated when I started using  my computer. (not computer savvy - what did I know!!)  Anyway, after comcast walking me through setting up my email account on the computer I could send and rec. emails.  I ignored the mcafee window pop-ups for updating.  Once I did the first update - that is when the emails would NOT send/rec emails.  Went through the hoops until I found that the culprit was something in the mcafee security. Once uninstalled, bingo emails could be sent/rec.  I was leary about getting on the computer without uninstalled virus/firewall stuff.  Not being familiar with the use of cd/dvd I got my daughter's boyfriend to show me the reinstall of mcafee.  As he was doing this I commented that I noticed the startup notice of mcafee always indicated that only virsus and firewall were installed and operating - but the privacy service was NOT installed.  He  got that going - so all  3 are now functional and with your input I will be keeping my eye open for info on Norton security like you suggested.  THANK YOU  I might give the dell contact option a try.

again thanks                suzzQ
