SSD in an XPS 8300

Is there any reason why I can't install an SSD for the primary (boot ) drive in my XPS 8300 and use the existing SATA HD as a backup storage drive in the same machine?

No reason why you cannot.   SSD's Detrap over time and temperature.

I usually Get an Apricorn SATA Wire and just Clone the Drive to the SSD and then install it in an ICY Dock or Silverstone Adapter if the hard drive is 3.5 inches.  The DELL part for this is R494D

I used this to upgrade my xps 8300. works great and pretty sure using pcie would be faster than the sata adapter

I would ... like years ago.

Your SATA should be SATA-3/600 ... so a SSD will be like 4 times faster than any conventional spinning HDD.
