I have a xps studio with an Amd phenom ll x4 945 processor and 8 gig of ram I want to upgrade a faster unit is any suggestion the a processor

Phenom II is the top cpu for motherboard of XPS studio 7100. You can consider upgrading to Intel motherboard such as that of XPS 8900 and Intel 6th gen cpu while keeping the 7100 case. The 8900 case appears to have same design and form factor as 7100.

I realize that it's months after your post but I'm just now joining the community, I saw that someone suggested the Phenom II x4 945, reading that compelled me to join so that I could enlighten you, the most powerful processor that the Dell XPS 7100 will run is the Phenom II X6 1090T, your motherboard can handle a 125w processor though I'd suggest you upgrade the stock cooler, anyway I hope this knowledge is of use to you or perhaps a future viewer of the post
