Studio XPS 8100, upgrade, ram

Hello to all the community,

I have a Dell XPS Studio 8100 with 4x1GB (total 4GB) of DDR3 ram. I have found in good price on two sticks of Vengeance 8GB (total 16GB). The motherboard supports up to 16GB (1333MHz). My question is can the motherboard/cpu support two sticks of 8GB or should it be 4 sticks of 4GB? Also new ram is higher speed than motherboard supports is that a problem?

Thank a lot for the support.

8GB sticks are not validated.

Dell validated configurations =
16GB (4GB/4GB/4GB/4GB)
12GB (4GB/4GB/2GB/2GB)
8GB (4GB/4GB) or (2GB/2GB/2GB/2GB)
6GB (2GB/2GB/1GB/1GB)
4GB (2GB/2GB) or (1GB/1GB/1GB/1GB)

Dell validated 4GB DDR3 sticks =
P382H 4GB,1333MHz,512X64,240pin,2RX8,Unbuffered,Dual Rank,1.5V,Non-ECC
60KD4 4GB,1333MHz,512X64,240pin,2RX8,Unbuffered,Dual Rank,1.5V,Non-ECC
N852H 4GB,1066MHz,512X64,240pin,2RX8,Unbuffered,Dual Rank,1.5V,Non-ECC

Here are the memory specs from the Dell manual.  Looks like 4GB per memory manual max.  Some higher speed memory will work but it will only run at the speed of the memory bus and not the speed of the memory.  Best to stick with compatible memory to avoid problems or memory that won't work.

What I listed is from the Dell spec's for the Studio XPS8100.

Here is the link to the Crucial memory listing for the Studio XPS8100.  Crucial is guaranteed to work in Dell's and what we mostly suggest for non-Dell memory.   It only shows 4GB memory modules.

I have an XPS 8000 running 32gb in it (4 x 8Gb sticks). And yes all the memory is visible to the OS and assignable.

There are multiple reports of people running 32Gb in XPS 8100s on the internet (e.g. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3494817/dell-xps-8100-runs-32gb-ram.html ) so I think you would be fine.

XPS 8000 has a p55 motherboard, XPS 8100 has an h57, very similar motherboards. When they were released suitable 8Gb sticks didn't exist so neither Dell nor intel ever tested 8Gb sticks.

About the speed, no it doesn't matter, the motherboard will just run the memory at a lower speed than it's rated.

DDR3 1600 will downclock to 1333 just fine.

I do not know for sure but I do not think 8GB sticks will work in an 8100.

That said, going from 4GB to 8GB is a solid, and necessary upgrade in my opinion.

8GB to 16GB is nice to have, and depending on what workloads you are doing may not make any difference in system performance.

good luck

I have an 8100 with four 4Gb sticks (Kahlon) running fine.

My question regarding further upgrade is what will the existing PS handle.

Since the machine is apparently working 100% good and stable with 16gb ... I suggest you stop there and just use it as is. This machine is fairly old and if you are asking this question (in the first place) ... I think you will probably regret messing with it.
