XPS 8700, Intel RST update failed

Dell SupportAssist gave me to the option to Update my BIOS and my Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.  I clicked "Install" and the BIOS update was OK, but after a brief wait the RST update gave a result of "Failed". I tried again after re-booting to complete the BIOS update, with the same result. SupportAssist gives no further details or explanations. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Malware routinely breaks the catalog files so that this won't install.

The other reason for such an error is that the version you are trying to install is either too low or too high.

Intel does not allow you to go from 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13 to 14 to 15 with reckless abandon.  As the chipsets get newer they DROP SUPPORT for older chipsets and MCH aka you cant keep updating with gen 3 4 5 6 7 or downgrade to 10.1.0.1008 on GEN7 SKYLAKE / COFFEELAKE

12.6.0.1033 is as low as you go.

Try this one

Version: 12.9.0.1001

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23496/

Next step up would be 13.6.0.1002

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24779/

I would NOT EXPECT 14 OR 15 to be working however.

It would be helpful to know what operating system you are running, and what is the currently installed version of the Intel RST? Also, did you reboot after installing the BIOS BEFORE trying to install the Intel RST?

I have the same problem also with my Dell Aurora R7. I did not upgrade to the latest bios( 1.0.14 dated aug 2018)) but I tried to upgrade the Intel Rapid storage tech f6 driver ver. 16.5.4.1032  and it as failed twice.  Should the bios be update first?

thanks in advance.

Exactly. There have been several core-architecture changes to Intel-RST over the years.

This coupled with bugs left behind in old versions is why I ...

... set BIOS to non-RAID or AHCI, clean install Windows, and never install Intel-RST in the first place (just use the Microsoft drivers).
