XPS 8900, BIOS update won't open
I have a Dell XPS 8900 that I bought at Costco. The warranty expired in February 2018. Support Assist refuses to install, telling me that I must have a Dell machine to use it. This IS a Dell machine. Support tells me that my BIOS is out of date. I downloaded the file, double-clicked, said "yes", allow it to make changes, and then nothing happens. crickets chirp. I have tried downloading on several different drives (on my PC) and tried opening it several times, but this continues.
I did add a solid state drive to the computer, which has my OS. Is that why it won't work? How can I get around this?

Try this. Download the bios file. Right-click the file and choose properties. Mark "Unblock". Then right-click and "Run as Administrator".

If you bought this PC from Costco, did you create an account and register the PC's Service Tag in your name? It may take ~14 days after you register before the Service Tag appears in your name. (Never post a Service Tag in this forum.) And you'll need to have it in your name to get warranty coverage.

BTW: You're better off NOT letting SupportAssist do BIOS updates for you. They seem more likely to fail that way than downloading it manually and doing it yourself...
EDIT: Always include exact PC model in your posts. And if you run a BIOS update from inside Windows, you may need to disable your anti-viral suite first and re-enable it when the BIOS update is finished.

Thank you for your message. What is the exact system model in question here?
What is the present version of BIOS & Support Assist application installed?
Have you tried updating the BIOS by downloading it directly from support site?
For my reference, please click on the message tab next to your avatar– click “New Message” & search for my Dell username (Sreejith R) & send a private message with the service tag, registered name & email address.
