XPS 8900, Windows 10, FireWire PCIe card recommendations

Hi, I have a Dell XPS 8900 running Windows 10.  I need to install a PCIe Firewire card to help with some video capture tasks from my old Sony Handycam (which has a 4 pin Firewire output).  I am really struggling to find cards that specifically state support for Windows 10.  Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks!  TimH

I use WinDV , ScenalyzerLive, and even TotalMedia 3.5 (It was the software that came with an old USB TV /capture stick).

All three see my DCR-TRV530 and allow capture.  None of them are actively supported and are fairly old software but you should be able to find plenty of help on the web.

WinDV and ScenalyzerLive are free but they only capture, TotalMedia probably has a newer version but I'm not sure.

ScenalyzerLive http://www.scenalyzer.com/

I might try Sony PlayMemories.

I liked the old Firewire, but haven't needed a PCIe card in many years.

If I needed one now, I would buy this one Syba SY-PEX30016

.

I put this one in my XPS 8900 Windows 10 pro about 2 weeks ago, not a single glitch.

Thanks for the replies everyone!  I like this option as it has a 4 wire out the back - and I have a 4 pin male x male cable already.  Awesome, order is in!

On the Apple Mac, I use iMovie ...

But on Windows, I use Adobe Elements Suite 14 (Photoshop and Premiere) . It works, it's cheap, and they might even have a trial version if you want to try-it first.

Looks like the latest Sony PlayMemories is here ?

Hi All,

I am back again.  Thanks to your help I got a Firewire card and installed it into PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 4, device 0, function 0) with no issues.  I plugged my Sony DCR TRV25 into the card slot.  I then heard the audible sound indicating a new device was installed but the SW I am using (Sony Playmemories) does not seem to recognize/see the camcorder plugged into the card?  I checked Device Manager and saw the IEEE 1394 host controller so the system knows it is there.  The driver was from 2006 so after some digging saw that moving to an alternate driver may help so I installed the 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) from the Microsoft site.  The install went well and the new 6.1.7601.22370 1/4/2013 driver is now installed and the device shows to be working properly.  However, Sony Playmemories SW seems to be looking for a camera or camcorder in a USB port?  I can't see any way to point it to the Firewire card so may be better off just moving to an alternate piece of SW to help capture the images from my Mini DV tapes to my computer hard drive?  Any thoughts or suggestions for me on this?

thanks again!

Does not look like my prior reply took?  Anyway, thanks again for the replies.  I downloaded ScLive and it seems to be a great option, can see my camera via the Firewire card so looks like that is solved.  Thanks again for your help.  I am totally into this forum...becuase people actually reply to your questions!!;-)

Thanks again

- Tim

The issue is that Legacy Directx and Movie maker were REMOVED from windows 10.

Prior to END OF LIFE END OF DOWNLOAD you could get the WINDOWS ESSENTIALS 2012 offline installer.

Both Microsoft and Apple Dropped support for Firewire because texas instruments wants royalties for the Firewire Interface.

USB3 and Thunderbolt are the replacement for these interfaces.
