XPS 8920, difference between special edition and standard
When the mobo quit on the 8920 they shipped a special edition model to replace it which might help when it's time to sell it but from what I can gather the only difference is the silver front model has a better GPU in it (which they removed). I am correct?

I am pretty sure you are correct, that the only differences are the silver front and what may be options on the standard version are added like extra memory, larger HDD, better GPU, etc. The motherboard is the same.

Correct. There is only one XPS 8920 motherboard, part number VHXCD.
