XPS 8930, Intel i5-9500F compatible?
Does anyone know if Intel Core i5-9500F might work on the Dell XPS 8930? I know it's not on the list but not sure why it wouldn't work? Would it be due to the wattage difference?

What CPU do you currently have in your XPS-8930, that you would be contemplating a swap?
Normally, a Dell computer BIOS only contains micro-code to allow certain CPU chips to work-properly. They are the ones it originally shipped with and should be listed in one of the PDF manuals.

It is a 65 watt processor, the same as others supported by XPS 8930. It is also a 6 core, 6 thread processor that does not support hyper-threading, with no onboard graphics . . . so possible too low end, even for Dell. If it is not supported by the Dell BIOS, it will not work.

The manual may have listed only tested and validated processors at the time its published. Dell added gen 9th processors to system configurations later on but did not update the documentations.
While it may work with your XPS 8930, its performance may not considered the best upgrade option.
I ran a quick scan and found many XPS 8930 with i5-9400F but hardly any i5-9500F.

For 9th gen intel cpu you need to make sure 8930 bios is updated to at least 1.1.3 before installing new cpu.
user validated i5-9400f in 8930. i5-9500f will likely work if bios is up to date.
XPS8930 was first released in October 2017, original stock 8th gen.
9th gen i9-9900k or i7-9700k was released 1 year later in October 2018.
Early 8930 bios 1.01-1.013 (up to Aug 2018) did not support 9th gen. In Nov 2018 bios update 1.1.3, Enhancements:
- Enhanced to support Intel i9-9900K, i7-9700K and i5-9600K processors.

I actually removed everything but the motherboard and the power supply to a new system that had better heat control. I was thinking maybe just slap a lower-end/low-wattage CPU and make it a small home server but didn't want to get a pricey processor. Thank you everyone for your info and suggestions. It helped a lot. You all are awesome.
