XPS 8930, Overclocking the 8700k CPU?
First of all I do not really plan to overclock this PC. This is a "I am curious" question". The Dell website indicates that the 8930 with 8700k can be overclocked via the Bios. However, the overclock option is disabled and greyed out. For Alienware there appears to be an application that Dell supplies that can be run in Windows 10. I am guessing it is installed at the factory. Does anyone understand this?

It seems someone had success clearing the CMOS to get the overclocking features in the XPS 8910: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/Help-with-cpu-upgrade-in-XPS-8910/m-p/5699956#M2372
You can also try the Intel XTU (Extreme Tuning Utility) program.

I can adjust it. I just didn't realize that I could access that function in the BIOS.

I am confused. You first stated, "However, the overclock option is disabled and grayed out.", then you stated, "I can adjust it.". So what changed from then to now?
The online Service Manual page 126 shows =

Chris, do you recommend a slight overclock setting? is there a possibility to install a liquid cooler after warranty?

1. I'm not Chris, but I suggest you DO NOT OVERCLOCK if you want your processor to last a long time. It's fast enough already and designed to run at "stock clocks".
2. Sure, anything is possible. But see the other thread. Some of these new XPS machines are built for looks and low-end use ... there just isn't much room inside the cases for a radiator and its fan.

My XPS 8930 (which I had fully intended to overclock and replace the cooler depending on capability in the bios) is very very limited and I'm not quite sure it's actually over clocking anything even though the "Overclocking Feature" within the Advanced tab is "enabled" Nothing other than "enabling" the overclocking feature is actually configurable it seems.

disabling intel speedstep (which used to remove the multiplier & Core VID changing so it was a static core value instead of being variable) does nothing unfortunately, same as the intel speed shift technology.
Core ratio limit override/Core voltage mode/core voltage override are not accessible and only show up once the "overclocking feature" and "core over clockign level#" are set to enabled and OC LV 1.
Would love to actually overclock this cpu, the stock cooler is pretty neat even though it needs dissipation work but it's easily replaceable which is the reason I purchased this instead of the comparative Alienware equivalent which was over $650 more.....
