XPS 8930, PSU upgrade, #4

How do I find a suitable PSU upgrade that will fit in the 8930. What do I need to check, will any PSU fit in the case? Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

OLD PSU went south

or  dreaming of gaming, and need PCI-e=AUX power,  6x2 (times 2) cables of the huge power hungry GPU? card?

I can only guess but are you dreaming of this. 6+2 below?  many are, and bingo?

8930. (and welcome here) uses standard ATX 24pin power plug,  a great IDEA and thing here.

well in most cases all Dells that use the ATX formatted PSU case,  any PSU 750watts or less fit.

over 750w, they get longer, and you need to use a ruler to find fit for length.

the new PSU will also have lots of DC cables inside or better those great, modular port versions,!

unlike Dell SPARSE cabled PSU.

the only trick is 5vdc is 25amp rated, make sure the new PC meets or beats that. 750w will.

this is yours right? look first, after all it might already be upgraded.

the CORSAIR  TX-xxxM series does this 550 up. !

@godzillaatemyhomework   What do I need to check, will any PSU fit in the case? Any advice is welcome.

I upgraded my XPS 8930 to a Seasonic Focus fully modular 850 watt PSU that does not adhere to the power output specifications pictured up-thread. I have had 'zero' problems in over 20 months with this PSU. I also know of others that installed this PSU and have had no problems at all. Perfect fit. (click photos to embiggen)

Dell OEM psu label spec details often have limited practical meaning.  I would only look at total W on label.

Interesting that Dell specify 25A for their 5V supply in a 460W PSU, since they 850W PSU is only specified as 20A!

the 20amps is plenty, but you  do know dell has no real spec,s.

ever read the specs that intel did on their mobo for years. (a TRUE Example of GREAT for ever)

they told even noise figures.  and currents on all rails.  (we know what added things do, all I need is a mobo  spec.

crickets.

no parts lists either for most PC made. (unless new and is on the sales page new)

keep in mine the engineer picked those numbers (amps)

for the worst case full load of HDD and GPU, and all things connected, today we have 25watt USB slots BC1.2

then he adds margin to that for huge dynamic currents and temperatures. up to 95F,  and cold.

I may add 25% more for aging effects and worse case hDD currents, of 25 watts each for say 15,000 RPM HDD.

THE MT is hugely versatile , box.

Hey @Anonymous,

Based on your reports, online reviews and my own dimensional measurements I am upgrading my XPS 8930 from my stock 460W ASPF PSU to the Seasonic Focus PX-850, 850W 80+ Platinum (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07W4PMQDJ/ref=crt_ewc_title_oth_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB).

Thanks for sharing your information!

Hey @Anonymous, The mod went well. The quality, quiet and fit are perfect. The only hiccup: Seasonic does not provide a 6-pin SATA cable so I am not able to power my optical drive (yet). Inquiries are out to Seasonic. Thanks for your information.

SATA 15-pin to 6-pin Slimline Adapter  . . . this would not be part of the PSU cable set.

OLD post butttt just wanted to point out that I believe you're mixing up the internal power supply ratings at the internal wiring of 5VDC with the 20A rating required upstream at your electrical panel's circuit breaker. Typically at 120VAC you can have a load of up to 2400W (80% of breaker size). Power = Volt x Amps (single phase) = 120V*20 = 2400W

This has nothing to do with the 25A internal circuit wirings at 5VDC.
