XPS 8930, no display until Windows 10 login screen?

I'm hoping someone here can help me. My father recently purchased (two months ago) a XPS 8930 from Costco. It ran great for a week or two, but has since slowed down and now freezes hourly, sometimes rebooting itself, sometimes requiring human intervention. Either way, my frustration at this point is this. When I restart the PC, my display does not show anything on the screen from the moment I click "restart" until I reach the log on screen again. Hence, not leaving me with the ability to boot into the bios, using F2 or &12, or boot into the diagnostic partition. I plugged into the DP port, using an HDMI adapter. Everything else, display-wise is fine, just can't see any of the usual startup info. Help? Please?

Thanks! Tim

Non Dell Cards REQUIRE Secure Boot OFF and Legacy ON.

You can try turning off then piano press F2 then F12 then F2 then F12 over and over.

When installing an after-market graphics card into a certified Windows PC with UEFI Secure Boot enabled, the system may not boot.

The recent Forced Update to windows 10 1803 has caused many self destruct boot to black screen of death.

You will have to reinstall clean starting with 1803.

You could also try the media recovery tool

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln299044/

What you will need

  • Service Tag of the Dell PC on which you want to install Microsoft Windows or Linux
  • Download and install Dell OS Recovery Tool (runs in Microsoft Windows only)
  • Blank USB flash drive with at least 16GB (Anything on it will be erased)
  • Microsoft .Net Framework 4.7.1 https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=56116
  • Administrator user rights and at least 8GB of available hard Drive space to download the Dell ISO recovery image

Try pressing F2 or F12 immediately after powering on, even though the screen is blank...

And be more specific, exactly where is the DP port, on the PC or on the monitor? Can you connect directly from HDMI(PC) to HDMI(monitor)?

Did you recently update any software, eg install the April'18 update (build 1803) of Win 10, or driver updates, or do a BIOS update?

Exactly which video card do you have in this PC?

Yes, I've tried F2 and F12, even with the blank screen.  It appears to respond to the command (just sits...), as it stops boot-up, but nothing else happens.

The DP port is on the PC itself.  I was using straight HDMI to HDMI previously, when the issue started.  No recent updates that I'm aware of, although Windows Update is set to automatic.

The graphics card appears to be either an Intel or a NVIDIA.  Please see screen shot.

Thanks!! Timdisplayadapters.PNG

Not sure what you mean by "The DP port is on the PC itself." All the video ports are on the PC. Is the video port you are using on the graphic card or on the back panel. If it is on the back panel the port will not work if the graphics card is installed. If the graphics card is installed you need to use the ports on the graphics card. If the graphics card is not installed then you can use the back panel ports which are connected to the integrated graphics.

FYI: Only you can see the images you upload to this forum. No one else can see them. It's an issue with this forum platform.

The only way you can post an image that we can see is if you click Photos on the toolbar and then click the URL tab when that window opens. Insert the URL for an image that's hosted on another site, eg on your Google drive account in a folder that's marked for public viewing (sharing).

I had this same exact issue after moving my XPS 8930 tower on my desk. When I opened the case to reset the BIOS, I found before doing anything that the video card was very loosely seated and not in all the way, must have came like that from the factory? Moving it a little just was enough for it to finally lose proper contact. I seated it properly and then powered on my machine and I had the DELL logo again and was able to enter the BIOS settings everything was fine again. This was clearly a DELL build quality control issue.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread, because I also couldn't get into my 8930 BIOS, and the solution is to use the add-on video card that comes with this XPS model.  I wanted to test a startup recovery CD from my backup software, but I wasn't able to get into the BIOS no matter what I tried - and I believe I tried them all, including the restart/UEFI option from within Windows, the Shift/Restart option, various combinations of F2 and/or F12, different timing based on when the LEDs flashed on two different USB wired keyboards... etc. Fast Startup was not engaged.

The result of all my attempts to boot into the BIOS or into UEFI was to be staring at a monitor with no signal and hearing no activity from the hard drive, although the PC power button was on.  Had to force a shutdown every time.

--->>But the real clue is that I never saw the Dell logo/splash screen.

The XPS 8930 comes with on-board display ports (a DP and HDMI)  and that's where my two monitors were plugged in.  This model also comes with an NVIDIA 3D gaming card, for which I have no use (I thought) - but that was the solution.  I didn't even have to turn off the PC to switch the HDMI cable for my #1 display over to the NVIDIA card.  I restarted, hit F2, and voila!  BIOS!  Yay!!!!!

The XPS 8930 comes with two Intel integrated (on-board) graphics ports (a HDMI and a DisplayPort).
