XPS 8930, not detecting audio jack connection

Something you may be running may change the default playback device. Check Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Sound and on the Playback tab see if Speakers/Headphones is set as the default device. I don't think the computer detects when audio devices are connected to the audio jack, only to the USB and HDMI ports.

On my XPS 8900 playing through speakers connected to rear and I plug in earbuds to the top headset port I get a notice from Windows 10/Realtek HD Audio Manager that a device has been plugged into audio jack and a box opens up asking "Which device did you plug in?"  Sound still plays from speakers and from earbuds.

I had a similar problem,

my speakers pull from the monitor which is connected to the video card by HDMI and use Nvidia HD audio drivers.

when I plug in headphones I was missing a little pop up box that asked what I plugged in and so got nothing, when I acknowledge headphones the audio switches to the headphones and the Realtek audio drivers.

Control Panel > Sound shows what is going on.

SamCau, no one said you need to restart the PC every time you decide to plug in your headphones. You just need to tell the system what you are doing and select the correct playback source. Say your headphones are plugged in and  your monitor's speakers are connected via HDMI how does the computer know where to output the sound? You may have set HDMI by default. With multiple possibilities for playback devices how is the system to know which one you want useless you tell it?

I appreciate the help but I'm not a total noob, I don't use HDMI connection because it caps your FPS at 60, I use a monitor with a higher refresh rate so use a DVI connection.

My headset (plugged in through the audio jack) is set as the default audio device on the computer, it is not picked up in my Sound control panel when plugging it in though. The headset and earbuds work just fine on other systems. 

I am running Windows 10 on an XPS 8910 and when I connect/disconnect headphones to either the front panel Headphone port or the back panel Front L/R surround line-out port I get a new notification in Windows notifications from the Realtek HD Audio Manager that I had either plugged in or unplugged a device from the audio jack. I assume that the XPS 8930 should work the same way. Check in All settings | System | Notifications & actions under "Get notifications from these senders" that notifications for Realtek HD Audio Manager is turned On. If the problem persists, I suggest you try uninstalling then re-installing the Realtek audio driver.

not one told what the PC THEY have fully, what options on the PC? (all things in it and plugged in )

audio jack means ZERO ok, tell what that mean first then tell WHERE IT IS.

3.5mm line out is NOT and audio jack that is  Line out for amp'd speakers, or ear buds or for 3.5mm real head phone

there are endless USB audio device,

there monitors that support sound.

to fix sound problems on ANY PC tell the helper if.  WHAT YOU HAVE THERE IN DETAILS.

all jacks told. and to what,  usb, 3.5mm lineout, VGA,DVI , HDMI and DP , all that maters

and last and not least what PCI-e cards are there. and for sure connected to anything. (gpu and even sound cards)

if using any monitor made in earth does it have sound features, and if yes, what is it,HDMI , DP ?

pretend the helper is blind (we are in text box) and show rear and front of pc and cards added to any PC

and all USB ports and all video ports used nor not used.

what does that mean? what did you expect from WHAT/?

on my PC i have 10 USB ports

and PC devices, a mouse and keyboard

so 8 USB ports with 8 USB sound devices, (DAC, headphones and speakers)

and 1 sound card,

for a total of 10 sound device and windows goes NUTS,  id never try that but that is what we have now.

COMPLEXITY and so bad MS even tells you they flat refuse  to help with that,

or even USB sound chips in a monitor, the choices today are ENDLESS. unlike the golden simple days

of SOUNDBLASTERS in 1995

I can tell you  for a fact if too many sound chips are connected the cure may be impossble,  they may not play well together at all, the drivers do get confused, doing all that. the add to that Bluetooth sound 11 sound devices. possible at one time.

that is why we ask you (begging ) what do you have there, connected , all things, ok?make and model too.
