XPS 8930, smoking

I turned on my dell XPS 8930 yesterday, (this desktop is just over 2 years old) and it made a high pitched whizzing sound. The monitor did not come on, and I powered it back down. Tried it one more time and same thing happened, but when I powered it back off the second time, it started to blow grey smoke out the top. I unplugged it immediately and set it outside. Today when I opened it up, I found some dust on the inside. I pulled out my hard drive, and saw some discoloration on the motherboard behind it. There are also charred marks on the back of the metal hard drive case. I realize I probably didn't take as good care of cleaning it as I should have, but any ideas as to what could have happened? Is there a safe way i could go about troubleshooting it?

Glad you were able to pull the power cord quickly...

Do you only have the one HDD in this PC, with no SSD?

The issue now is whether the problem was the HDD, the motherboard, or maybe the power supply, and did it cause damage to any other components...?

Attempting to fix this yourself could be risky. So consider taking it to a reliable PC shop and/or contact Dell Out-Of-Warranty Repair for an estimate to fix it.

Thank you for replying so quickly. Sorry I wasn't as prompt.

I only have one HHD, no SSD.

It doesn't look like there's any visible damage to anything else.

Is there a safe way to check to see if the power supply is still working?

Did you ever do any mods to this PC?

Is the hard drive fully disconnected from the motherboard and from the PSU?

Unfortunately, damage to other components may not be visible. And you probably don't know which component actually caused the smoke, so I'd be reluctant to plug this PC in again.

Really think you should take this PC to an expert who can diagnose and fix...
