XPS 8930, won't boot after cpu upgrade

My PC came with an Intel i3 8th gen core cpu and I want to upgrade it to a core i7 6700. However once I install the i7 into my system, my pc won't boot. Once i go back to the i3 everything works perfectly. Does this mean the i7 is incompatible or broken or is there more I need to do to get it to accept a new processor?

PC Info:

  • 460W Power Supply
  • 1TB 7200 rpm SATA HDD
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 with 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Memory
  • 8GB (1X8GB) DDR4 Ram, 2400MHz; up to 32GB

The specs for the XPS 8930 says that it supports 7th generation or higher Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i7K processor. The i7-6700 is a 6th generation Intel Core processor. I think it is due to the Intel Z370 chipset in the XPS 8930.
