XPS 8950, doesn't always sleep

XPS 8950

XPS 8950

Okay, so I've had my 8950 since March and it's been a fantastic machine thus far. However, I recently ran into a latency issue and reset the machine, updated BIOS, and reconfigured the power settings (maximum performance), which solved the issue. However, I've since encountered an issue where the computer shuts down when I want it to sleep. I realize that the power setting affect many things, but as the power settings are set to max performance, I'm encountering an issue where when I command the computer to sleep (Fuction+Sleep button), it will sometimes actually go to sleep with no issue, while other times it will shut down entirely and require a re-boot to use again. Otherwise, it's a fantastic machine and it runs excellent.

I even have the "When I press the power button" option set to Sleep and not shut down. Not sure what the issue is and although it's not a serious issue, it's rather annoying when I have to boot my machine several times a day since I'm in and out of my office.

Also of note is that this issue only started after the reset.

Any guidance is appreciated!

It shuts down automatically after a set time in Sleep but it is actually Hibernating. A brief press of the power button will wake it with all the files and programs still open. To change settings go to Advanced Power settings. It takes a little longer to start. It's really better for laptops to save the battery. You can disable it on your desktop. Look up Hibernation for more info.

No, this occurs immediately after commanding it to go to sleep. The power light on the tower goes totally dark (instead of blinking off and on), the GPU also shuts down, and pressing the power button when the light is off initiates a boot-up.

I've been able to identify that this issue goes in a small pattern. When commanded to sleep over a course of two commands (sleep then wake), it will sleep without any issues on the first command, then when I wake up the computer and use it awhile, it will shut down when the sleep command is issued.

Doing some research, I decided to prevent sleeping entirely, so that instead when I close the lid it hibernates. This is similar to sleep - takes a bit longer to go into & out of hibernation but unlike sleep doesn't drain the power, so it's an acceptable alternative.

To do this I enabled Block Sleep in BIOS: restart the computer, hold F2 down when it's restarting to allow you to edit the BIOS, go into Power Management and choose Block Sleep.
