Automatic Windows Device Encryption/BitLocker on Dell XPS Systems

Just be aware that your primary drive will become automatically encrypted on the newer Dell XPS, without telling you, if you use or sign in to a any Microsoft service or redeem a MS offer and have the required hardware (which is basically a Dell XPS).

"This occurs very similar to smartphones and is completely seamless for the use"

It's so seamless in fact it doesn't tell you it's happening until you need to recover your hard drive following a failed Windows update.

"Automatic device encryption only starts after the Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) is completed and a Microsoft Account (MSA) is used on the system (e.g. use MSA for Windows logon, add MSA as email, app and work/school account, log into the Microsoft Store app with MSA, redeem/activate Microsoft Office or other Microsoft applications with MSA)."

So how to you recover your PC when you can't login because your drive is now encrypted, Windows can't recover onto an encrypted drive, and allegedly your bitlocker key is saved in your Windows account (but it isn't saved in your account because your Windows account is telling you, bitlocker was never activated).

Well guess what you get to install factory settings.  Data gone, yes.

Any tips on how this mess can be sorted any better?

First how about telling customers you are turning on bitlocker, if they don't want this, let them opt out.

or

ask them if they want bitlocker turned on, warn them if they don't make a record of their 32 number bitlocker key, their software and data will be permanently lost and only a factory install will enable your PC to work.

other?
