Dell XPS 13 9310 sleep mode issues

Hi,

I have had problems with XPS 9310 when in sleep mode. Let's say I'm working a word/power point document or have opened a few browser tabs and place it in sleep mode by closing the lid or pressing the power button simply let the laptop go into sleep mode as per power settings. A hour or two later I lose all my work and find there's dell on board diagnostics running a hardware scan with the message. "Hardware scan complete with no issues". I have been in touch with Dell support multiple times and the best they have done so far is update BIOS and run on installed the Dell Support assist software multiple times.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Here's what I'm doing on affected XPS 13 and 15:

(Several of our XPS would crash in sleep while plugged in, run the fans 100% and get hot enough to cause mild burns).

Here's what we do-

Update everything to the latest firmware, driver etc.

In Local Group policy disable :

Allow network connectivity during connected-standby (on battery)

Allow network connectivity during connected-standby (plugged in)

Allow applications to prevent automatic sleep (on battery)

Allow applications to prevent automatic sleep (plugged in)

Turn on the ability for applications to prevent sleep (on battery)

Turn on the ability for applications to prevent sleep (plugged in)

In local group policy enable:

Allow Standby states (s1-s3) when sleeping (on battery)

Allow Standby states (s1-s3) when sleeping (plugged in)

Go into device manager > Biometric Devices > and disable / uninstall the Goodrix fingerprint reader. It should not show in device manager.

Go into bios and disable the finger print reader (if your bios will let you)

Is all that necessary? I doubt it- but my XPS 13 sleeps like a baby so don't at @ me!. Despite the finger print reader no longer working, its a great laptop now. I love it.

At this point, I would trade the aesthetics for functionality.. I have colleagues with an AMD-based Lenovo that have zero issues. How I envy them.

That's great, but the 9310 (the specific subject of this thread) has no BIOS support for S3 sleep. This means that any sleep (other than hibernate) is subject to sudden wakeup. The only solution to this would be that Dell issues a BIOS update that enables S3 sleep and, last thing I heard, that's not happening. In fact, AFAIK, the policy is to remove S3 from new laptop models from now on, so I only expect the situation to get worse.

I've said this before: this will be my last Dell laptop,

sbakker - I completely agree with everything you've said, I'm just stating what I did on my 9310, and it works great now. (typing this from my 9310)

Hey, all.  I've definitely had problems with this in the past, but I've been running without issues and with my fingerprint sensor and sleep enabled since April 26 (my last occurrence of the heating up, black screen, won't wake from sleep crash).  I did a bunch of things in the past to try to fix it, but then undid a few of the fixes and haven't had any problems since.  Here are the fixes that I've left active:

  • Disabled the "Signs of Life" options in the BIOS
  • Disabled the ability for WiFi to wake the machine from sleep (Wake on Magic Packet disabled in Device Manager for Killer WiFi)
  • Unchecked "Allow Computer to Turn Off Device to Save Power" option on Goodix fingerprint reader in Device Manager

I agree with everyone that it's frustrating that Dell has not fully tested their machines before selling them, since it took me 5 months of driver updates and troubleshooting to fix the problem that I shouldn't have to spend on a premium machine, but now that I've been crash-free for 4.5 months, I'm sticking with Dell.

My key learning?  Being an early adopter for a new Dell configuration is probably not the best idea.  Better to wait 4 - 6 months.

Good luck, all!

Hey everybody,

Just found a (*) Disable sleep option in the BIOS (I think I've got version 2.1.1 so far) and decided to try it.

Booted Windows -- yep, all of the deadly "sleep" options are now gone.

I'm okay to just have my screen turned off when I'm away, and hibernate after 20 minutes or so. Hibernation has been stable so far.

I still believe that some day Dell will fix the faulty Windows drivers to make "Windows modern standby" finally work.

Yeah, cool. I had better option - don't use Your laptop.

I also had issues with system stability where I closed the lid just to find the XPS either cold booting the next time opening it or sitting in system-recovery screen with fans running full throttle and waiting for user input..

I could track the faulty behavior down to HDR being activated for my internal display (3.5K OLED) which would cause BSODs when plugging in the AC adapter or when removing it or when having an external screen connected and closing the lid then. After having disabled HDR in the windows HD Color Settings, system would reliably wake from sleep for multiple days in a row.. Been in contact with Dell Pro Support only to get the answer, that this issue should be reported to Microsoft and Dell can do nothing about it..

Such a nice piece of hardware but as of now, I wouldn't consider rebuying it again..

Nothing's worked so far.  The only way for me to wake from sleep is long pressing the power button.

First support call, their solution was to disable the laptop from sleeping...really???

Now they want to send someone here to replace the motherboard and image hard drive!

I'm not sure how I feel about this and by the way I bought 2 xps 13's for me and the wife and they both have this wake problem.

These are brand new laptops by the way...

UPDATE

I just found something silly.

After disabling bitlocker, the wake issue went away.  Laptop wakes up fine now!!!

I don't want to ruin it for you, but I've already tried that. And it worked for some time.... Then it started happening again. Dell support is useless, running me in circles.

Fair enough.  I'm still not sure what to do but I really hoped for better support from Dell.

As for now, I got a fully stable system with an older driver version for the Intel Xe Iris graphics card that can be fetched from del.ly/6600JXaYA.

Before installing them, I performed a clean uninstall of the current drivers: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057389/graphics.html

The support team requested memory dumps and are still investigating the issue. Also, I reported the same issue on the intel forums (https://community.intel.com/t5/Graphics/Frequent-BSOD-when-toggling-Windows-10-HDR-on-off-for-Dell-XPS/m-p/1323943/thread-id/101961) where I provided a memory dump as well.

So the only thing I hope is that I don't have to stick on these outdated drivers forever...

That didn't take long.  It won't wake up again.  I did notice something else today.  For me, it's not the sleep that's the issue.  It is the "turn screen off" that is.  If I select never for "turn screen off after" and allow the laptop to sleep, it wakes just fine indicating to me it has to be a graphics situation.

Interesting.  I got a PM this morning about what you are describing.  At first I thought the message must have been meant for someone else.  As of right now, Dell wants to replace the motherboard on my brand new laptop but I fear that will not solve the issue.  I agree with most that this does appear to be a modern sleep/graphics driver type issue and like you, I really hope they come with a fix soon.  I love the laptop but can't stand a brand new device giving me headaches!
