Dell XPS 9300 - Thunderbolt 3 Power Delivery Issues

Hi,

I think I've seen other people post similar issues - it seems that Thunderbolt 3 support on the Dell XPS 9300 13inch (new 2020 Developer Edition) is broken. Whenever I connect a TB3 dock (Kensington SD5200T) using TB3 cable, I get a repeated connect / disconnect loop. This doesn't stop, no matter what I do, and it seems like a negotiation issue between the XPS and the Dock in terms of power delivery. The dock can supply 85W to the XPS, much more than its 45W requirement.

If I connect a charger to the dock and then connect the TB3 cable, or use a 15W USB-C connection on the dock, then the issue stops. It seems like TB3 power delivery management is broken. When is the fix coming?

So, in the base case where you experience the issue, the Kensington dock is plugged to the laptop without any external power? Or did you mean you have to plug in a charger directly into the laptop in addition to powering up the dock separately?

I can confirm that I have the same issue with a Dell TB16 dock, though mine eventually leads to a crash. I'm running Windows, but I assume that you're running Ubuntu on the dev edition? What are your hardware specs?

I've been working with Dell on this issue with my 9300, and what I've found to work is going into the UEFI settings and enabling all of the thunderbolt related settings under system configuration. I'll see if I can snap a photo of it, but, other than the boot hanging when connected to the dock, my TB16 and the 9300 have stayed stable for the past two days of usage.

Apologies for the delay - this is jollygama (from a different account). I'll try to modify my UEFI settings. But I still see this issue on Ubuntu. Are you on Windows?

@reaperaxe9 yes, running Windows 10 Enterprise. It's definitely not a 100% fix as I'm still dealing with some boot and sleep state issues, but at least power delivery is consistent now.
