Dell XPS 9310 over heating while in sleep mode

Today I experienced exactly that you wrote.
I pushed many times the power on button but did nothing. After that I pushed long and computer went down.

I afraid it will happen again at night.

@zoz2000 Did you keep it plugged in because I didn't.

Had the same problem with one of my XPS 9310 on 2021-02-09 too, i.e. same day.

Opened a support ticket.

Initial state:

The notebook was probably asleep. It was connected to the normal 45W power supply.

Findings

Around 23:00 (CET) we discovered that the notebook was extremely hot and the fans were running at full speed (at least they were pretty loud)

The screen was black. The computer was not responsive. Long press on the on/off key showed no effect.

Actions 

• Disconnected the power supply and the USB - no effect. Fans still running, computer not responsive.
• Removed the bottom 
• Disconnect the battery --> fans stopped
• Reconnect battery --> fans restarted and very slowly reduced the speed.
• mount the bottom
• Notebook could be restarted.
  • Battery was at 76%
• Shut down the the notebook and went to bed
• In the morning everything was ok.

Opened a ticket and sent the system log to Dell.

Still under investigation.

I am pretty concerned about the danger of fire. 

Same thing happened to me this morning. Closed the lid on my laptop and put it in my backpack before leaving for work.Upon arriving (45 min later), I opened the backpack, and it felt like an oven. Pulled the XPS 9310 out, and it was HOT to the touch. Eventually got it to wake up via the power button, and the fans cooled it down pretty quickly. Certainly not the experience one would hope for.

There are a bunch of other active threads that hit this same (or a very similar) problem. For me, it has been narrowed down to the laptop locking up (with a black screen) after a certain time of not using it, and only a hard/cold reboot, losing all open work, brings it back up. --The laptop may have been running hot also then, but I have not checked that.

I have sleep set to "never" while on AC in power options, but apparently it still goes into a certain sort of sleep or standby overnight regardless (presumably if it has not been used in a while). 

BIOS 2.0 did not solve the problem--and I have all the updated drivers.

It happens to me whenever it goes into sleep mode.

I just bought a Dell XPS 13 9310 and SAME EXACT PROBLEM

Lap Top lid was closed, Lap Top in sleep mode, I went to bed.

In the MORNING the Lap Top was SO HOT !!!!  And it would not turn on for 3 hours

POOR 1st impression for a first time DELL purchaser.

It is only 5 days old... Thinking of returning it

Same problem here and see no offered solution.  Will open a ticket I guess.

Has anyone managed to find a fix for this?   I also have a Dell XPS 13 9310 that overheats when in Sleep mode.

Ongoing issue. Check thru the forums for other threads on the issue. Some thinks that it driver realted and narrowed down to drivers to check but didn't confirm his findings yet.

I have multiple times the same problem.

Is there a solution?

I have exactly this problem with my new machine.

I have temporarily resolved by changing the power profile advanced settings to disable sleep mode, and enable hibernate instead.

The downside is that the laptop now takes a while to come back to life from hibernation, i.e. no more 'instant on', but at least it's not overheating alarmingly and crashing on a daily basis.

Dell support have so far been unable to resolve, despite updating all drivers, running all diagnostics etc.

I'll provide an update once I have anything more to add!
