Dell XPS 9510 sleep mode issues

Question

The laptop itself is amazing (especially the OLED screen), but again I'm experiencing sleep mode issues. I've done a clean windows 10 install (had to change SATA mode from RAID to AHCI), updated the BIOS and installed all drivers (mainly through windows update). Dell Command Update also states I have no updates left to be installed.

When I close the lid or press the power button (both configured to go to sleep mode), the laptop screen is turned off, but the fans are still spinning. Also when I slightly touch the trackpad, the screen is on immediately.

Any help is appreciated. Also curious to see if any other people are experiencing this issue, especially dell image vs. clean install.

Same issue here, even with Windows 11. It's especially bad when I'm connected to my docking station and then need to quickly disconnect and through the laptop in my bag and travel. A couple of hours later I find the laptop still on chugging away but super hot.  The config is to sleep when on batter after 15 mins. It's clearly not doing it.  If I open then laptop, then choose the 'Sleep' on the power menu, then it finally does actually sleep.

A new Windows feature called Modern Standby kicks in when you put the system to sleep mode. In this mode, generally background applications would be running - like Windows updates, wireless activity, etc. So, if it is needed to cool down the system the fans may come on. If you do not like this, you could instead use Hibernate mode. Have you tried the Hibernate mode to see if it works better for you?

I have the same laptop and the same issue. I don't want to hibernate the computer, I just want to put it to sleep, however the system doesn't actually do it. Fans are running, the computer can't be placed in a bag, the battery is draining as if I was using it.
I don't want hibernate (which is a completely different thing that moves RAM to SSD), I want sleep. I'm not sure if the culprit is modern standby, as I think the laptop simply doesn't go to sleep. Is there a way to debug this?

I have the same problem. Tried hibernating, but then my WE19TB dock fails when I turn the computer back on.

Same problem here. My only options seem to be sleep, shutdown and restart. I am unable to find hibernate in any of my settings. My laptop drains like crazy when it's supposed to be in Sleep, so it can't really be sleeping. I'll put it in airplane mode to slow the process if needed. It's really frustrating and I'd love to be part of the solution here.

Not sure why this is considered a solution. It's a really a bad work-around and showing that the system is just broken. Kind of hard to believe in 2022 a high-end laptop would have this problem.

I had this issue with the exact same model, I went through power settings and I toggled the settings back to Nothing hit apply and back to sleep when closing lid and hit applied that did the trick, maybe it needed to be reminded again. Maybe try that? GL!

Try the latest BIOS update from Jun 16, 2022 ... seems it fixed the problem for me.

Might have just found a true solution.https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-US/drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=Y0MNKThe latest (June 16) BIOS update has this fix (which is pretty much my problem):- Fixed the issue where the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernate mode, or shutdown state. This issue occurs when the monitor is connected to the system when it is in Sleep or Hibernate mode, or shutdown state.I just did a quick test and it worked. My case is when I'm connected to my docking station / monitor, and always have the laptop lid closed. When I disconnect the docking station (go from AC adapter to battery power) the laptop should go to sleep, but it never does.  My system never had a problem of sleeping if the lid is open and I just close it.

Unfortunately after a few days of testing, the latest BIOS fix doesn't really fix the problem I have. I use a DELL docking station and need the laptop to sleep when I disconnect it. I don't have time to open the laptop lid and close it again (nor have I ever had to do this with older laptops, both DELL and Mac).  Now when disconnect the laptop usually stays awake and the battery drains. It's really bad.

I've had this issue with the past 2 XPS's 9370 and 9570, as the moderator suggested hibernating is the only way to work around it, I think it's a bug with BIOS since my issues started when I updated. Surprisingly, my current 9500 doesn't have this issue.
