After sending off and getting a 2nd hand replacement top lid and discovering it was only slightly less damaged than my original, I got "creative", I bought 10 x15mm long 2.5mm flat hex nuts and bolts and then drilled right through the lid where the brass inserts for the screen mounts should be, tightened up the bolts, cut off the surplus thread with a dremil and added a touch of glue to hold the nuts tight. Job done. 

Problem started with  an overtight set of hinges which progressively destroyed all the inadequate brass mounting points for the lid/screen.
