Graphics on XPS 13 9305 under linux are laggy

I recently got a new XPS 13 9305. I proceeded to install Kali linux and I noticed that the graphics were supper laggy.

For example: If I drag the mouse across the screen the movement would be invisible or there would be a trail of mouse pointers or a copy of the pointer would remain in the place where it originally was. 

I have tried several linux distros: Ubuntu 20.04, 21.04, 21.10 (dev) and several kali linux. The kernels I remember trying have been 5.10, 5.13 and 5.14

I have also instructed xorg to use different drivers, I found that the fbdev driver seems to work, but I cannot connect external monitors (they only allow me to mirror the laptop screen)

And speaking of external monitors: if I connect them when the screen is laggy, the external monitors work just fine, but the built in display seems to either: work fine or still be laggy.

Another curious thing: the graphics seems to lag when there is no activity on the screen. If I open a terminal and then leave the mouse idle for a bit, the lag will start, but if then I type glxgears as soon as I hit enter and the gears start turning the lag will be completely gone... Maybe a power saving issue with the driver?

This seems more an issue of the intel graphics rather than of Dell... still, any thoughts?
