XPS 13 9310, charge light blinks

I have bios settings to charge the battery when below 50% and stop at 90%. When my XPS 13 9310 Developer Edition is between those values and not charging, the charging light on the front edge of the laptop will blink. Every few minutes it will come on for a few seconds. It's annoying.

It's not just about it being fixed. It's about what is being fixed and how it is being fixed. One may assume they are making the symptoms go away, but how and at what cost to the performance of the system?

It would be good to know two things:

  1. What did engineering determine is the problem?
  2. How is engineering approaching a fix?

Absent that, may I suggest that anyone who has the opportunity to benchmark their system with a favorite app do so now with turbo mode enabled. If engineering is fixing the problem by diminishing the performance of turbo mode because someone neglected to put a capacitor on the board to handle under-voltage caused by turbo mode, we should know it. If Dell is taking something away to fix a design flaw, we should be compensated for it.

When benchmarking, keep in mind that turbo mode is only going to kick in for short periods under certain circumstances. It is especially sensitive to temperature, so running repeated tests close together is not optimal. If someone has experience with formal benchmarking, that would be great.

Personally, I have a financial simulation I'll be testing.

Hi,

We are yet to get the complete update on this as our engineer team is still working on it but the will make sure the issue will be fixed.

Hi @DELL-Cares

Thanks for the update! It's good to know engineer team is working on a fix.

Of course, we expect this fix to definitely solve the issue and not just "hide" it.

Could you please confirm this correction will also fix the screen flickering when CPU is under heavy load, as it is also related to the "turbo boost"

Hi, Earl.

We are still waiting for an update from the product engineering team. As soon as we hear from them, we will keep you posted.

Indeed. One without the other is of limited value.

Hi,

I received an update from the Level 3 team. There should be a new firmware update within the 1st week of April.

This will make changes to the power usage of the system. These changes will not affect the performance of the system. The Performance will remain the same as advertised.

Hi @Dell-Geoffrey R

Thanks for the update, that's a good news!

Will this firmware update also fix the screen flickering issue ?

@Dell-Geoffrey RI can only second @SebDell's question which he and @Earl Magnus asked repeatedly without any clear answer yet.

I know you guys have lot's of work to do, but please be precise with your answers, then you avoid multiple follow questions which again create work for you.

There are 2 problems described in this thread which both have something to do with turbo boost:

1. display flickering (affects 9310 regular model and 2-in-1 model)
2. charge light blinking (affects 9310 regular model)

Now when you talk about a firmware upgrade, it would be nice if you could explicitly state

1. Which of the two issues it is supposed to fix?
2. Which models do get the firmware update you mentioned within the time frame you gave? For example the 9310 regular and 9310 2-in-1 model have different firmware files. Are both going to get the fix within the first week of May?

Thanks for your support!

The more I think about it, the more I think I only had it half right in my original diagnosis. The screen blinking is certainly due to current draw when turbo mode is engaged. I originally thought that the blinking light was due to the undervoltage event causing charging to start. I'm guessing that it's really because the machine tries to supplement juice from the adapter with juice from the battery. If that's the case, changes made to power management would probably be to engage the battery in advance of turbo mode being engaged, eliminating the flicking screen. Then, it's a simple matter of not lighting the light in this case to eliminate the other symptom. If all of that is correct, then the system will be sipping from the battery periodically when the turbo mode feature is enabled. With the high/low water mark charging policy, that may mean the battery is drained slowly, even when the machine is plugged in, until reaching the low water mark, then it is recharged. I hope the change does not result in the battery being charged on and off as turbo mode comes and goes -- that would be super bad for the battery, defeating the purpose of the policy.

Hi,

We understand your situation. Please ignore the date that was mentioned in the previous message. We have an update stating the firmware should be released approximately in the 1st Week May 2021 approximately that should resolve the issue. Do reach out to us un case you need any assistance.

So, a Dell person just asked me in a private message if I've tried updating to the bios released more than two weeks ago and, if so,  did it made the problem go away?

Why the heck would I do that when we've been told that the problem was identified and a fixed bios would not be released until this week?

This is crazy. This whole thing has been absolutely crazy. Will you please get your act together, Dell? Throwing mud at the wall to see if it sticks is not good customer support.
