XPS 13 9310, overheating

Turning off Turbo Boost does not solve the problem, other than slowing down the processor. Isn't that the reason why we bought a high performance super fast XPS 13 9310?

I can only speak to my experience. I never said its a good solution, merely one that appeared to work for me. And one I can hopefully return to using Turbo Boost as per normal.

Have you tried it? Or are you assuming?

I am experiencing the overheating on my XPS 13 9310 as well.  I'm not surprised to hear that the issue is likely due to USB-C charging.  I've had other problems with USB-C, for instance DisplayPort audio does not work reliably.  Sometimes when I boot, the monitors appear as sound devices, sometimes they are not present.

The BIOS update from 4-1-2021 has not solved the audio or overheating issues for me.

Like others on this thread, I bought this model to have a performant laptop that fits in a small form factor.  Turning off turbo modes would add disappointment to an already-disappointing experience.  My Broadwell NUC from 2015 is significantly more stable than this laptop when using all the same peripherals.

This is so obviously a problem Dell is aware of it. So far, after many, many consultations they tend to blame software for all the freezes. While this is quite possible, why my software and not Dells added software. Currently Dell Update doesnt work on my machine despite being reinstalled. Plus so far when running Update (web based) it wants to install software for devices I do not have (my machine came with AX1650 WiFi) and they want to install updates for numerous others but not this. After four months its frustrating not being able to rely on a $2,700 dollar machine.

I had the same problems, but not exactly overheating, it was more fan kicking in very early and the laptop warming up quickly.

What solved the problem with heat and fan noise for me =
* Selecting "quiet" mode in the Dell Power Manager
* Disabling Intel Turbo Boost in the BIOS configurator
* Deactivating the Windows Search with its always running "windows search index" or "windows search protocol" and around 15% CPU usage. Now CPU is around 1% in idle mode and instead of windows search, I am using "Everything" search instead. works great. no CPU throttling, no fan noise, no heat. best regards

So far, my XPS 13 is running quiet, cold and happy with most of the items you talk about in place except for Search. I'm not too concerned about a percent or two on the machine, its not a heavy use laptop.

I have the same issues several time since i bought it 2 months ago. I do not clearly see in your post what is the solution? Since yesterday it even does not switch on after been unplugged during the night? Quite a pity to have such issues for a high end PC not an entry level PC.

I found that Turbo Boost OFF in Bios and Quiet mode in Dell Power Manager seem to have solved it for me (so far at least).

yeah, quiet mode. not cool mode (this one runs the fans loud but cools it down). quiet reduces CPU power and keeps it away from throttling, together with intel boost mode turned off in bios. but what really helped with heat, as mentioned already, is turning off the windows search (see screenshot). I have no more issues. Today I used it plugged in with power, chrome, skype, etc, the fan was not kicking in once, no thermal runaway, just normal warm.

I recently opened the doors on a new Automation & Engineering company. We chose, blindly, to use Dell computers based on past experience. We agreed as a team that executives, managers and sales persons would use the XPS 13 9310 model. We started with (3) of the XPS and (16) of another Dell model for the engineers. ALL of the XPS laptops (no service tag numbers needed) are constantly running into this issue with nearly every update. I am the CEO. My 9310 is currently in the freezer for the 5th time since owning it less than (3) months. When I have time I will remove it from the freezer, spend countless hours changing settings, shutting features off, reading the latest blogs and hope it doesn’t overheat with the next update. If everything works out for Dell, it will last just long enough to be out of warranty when it actually dies. I will have spent at least a month’s wages of mine or company time working on the laptop not to mention the cost of the laptop to begin with. That’s $20k+ and $2k for the laptop itself. The cost is immense and aimless to have every owner trying to resolve this issue on their own. Dell employs technicians, engineers and call support persons all wrapped up in this situation too at a significant cost as well, but it does not compare to the cost to the businesses dealing with a defective product. Dell, it is your obligation to resolve this issue once and for all by means of a update, which should not require every owner to be a technician themselves.

Same problem here and today it also happened while on battery and laptop was in sleep mode with lid closed. No response, only way to get is back was holding power button shutting it down completely. From now on I'll shut it down completely overnight, quite unsafe device

Just noticed there is a firmware update 2.2.0 from April 19 that should:

"Updated the Thermal Algorithm to reduce the system temperature and fan noise."

Anyone tried that yet?

My machine has been operating fine so far since the last changes. However, I will update the Bios again for this change. Hopefully a permanent fix
