XPS 13 9310, overheating

I bought this Dell XPS 13 9310 last December. The first one died on delivery so a replacement was sent.  This one began working fine and I now have it loaded with Photoshop and my other apps. Core i7, 16GB and 1TB SSD.

The problem is it randomly overheats and freezes. When I touch it the underside is boiling hot. It sits on my wood desktop like my other laptops did for years without trouble. I've turned Thermal Management to Cool to no avail.

For the thousands I've invested, this is by far the most troublesome laptop I've ever had.

Are there any solutions? (I have read others experience the same).

I agree with Evernine, problem is with Sleep Mode. I've always left my computers to go into Sleep mode every night, but with my new XPS 13 I had exactly the same problem several others have described: I'd find it in the morning burning hot, fan racing and wouldn't switch on, and I'd have to force it off. Yesterday I went through the steps to enable 'Hibernate' mode as described in the FAQ Modern Standby.

I have changed the power settings so it goes into Hibernate instead of Sleep, as I don't mind it taking a little bit longer to come to life in the morning. Seems to have done the trick!

Anyone try the new BIOS yet?

XPS 13 9310, BIOS 3.0.3, June 23, 2021
Enhancements: Updated the Thermal Algorithm to reduce the system temperature and fan noise.

I would give this one 100 kudos if I could! My first one froze within the first hour of operation, and then like crazy every hour or so afterwards. I worked for hours with tech support to resolve the issue - they direct you to WhatsApp and then a techie tells you how to fix your own computer - so much for paying for the top level of support. After everything - a couple days with no improvement, Dell sent me another XPS 13 (32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD), and that did the exact same thing. They wanted me to go through all the same no result process as the last one. I am asking for a refund. I can't spend this kind of time on a top of the line machine that should just work always. My responsibility is to provide results for my company, not be a tech person fixing an unfixable PC.

I'm having the same issue with my XPS 13 9310 (i7) being charged over USB Type-C via a Dell U3818DW. I always put the computer to sleep when I walk away. I came home today, found the laptop so hot I couldn't touch it and the fan running on low. I had to force power off the computer, allow it to cool and then turn it back on.

This is a huge issue. There is definitely an issue and at the temperature the laptop was at, I'm shocked some type of thermal protection didn't kick in and shut it off.

I disabled the Modern Standby as described in this forum. It has helped quite a bit with the battery draining and the laptop overheating even with the lid closed on idle! I enabled back Intel TurboBoost to to get more processing power. There is a new BIOS version 3.0.3 for the XPS 13 - 9310 which I upgraded to.

The laptop runs cooler but if I play a 1080p video, run the bluestacks emulator or use TeamViewer it can get quite hot.

At least I am seeing some improvement.

What bugs me about this laptop is its not so good touchpad, its slippery and imprecise. I used someone's Lenovo Yoga and was amazed at how precise the touchpad was - this laptop cost less than half of the Dell 9310. The Apple MacBook Pro which I had before has the gold standard for touchpads.

The keyboard is good though. The Windows 10 screen brightness is too high even on the lowest setting, do you have this problem as well?

I'm continuing to experience the same problems, greatly disappointed at the lackluster support from Dell.

Do not let yourself be fooled by the great reviews, this XPS line is greatly flawed.

Yes I agree, you don't ever believe Google, after all they are paid by advertisers. After updating the "Dell Update utility" the laptop is getting hot again.

I guess the XPS13 can be used as a "hot plate" for cooking as well.

Yes not much difference with the 3.0.3 BIOS

Same problem after BIOS update.

The best mitigation is to completely disable "Modern" Standby. But I still find the laptop occasionally with black screen, and hard reboot is needed to restore it.

I have a similar experience, my XPS 13 is now 1 year old and for 3 months he has been in repair or waiting for repair. Constant overheating, no longer booting etc. Dell has done no less than 4 motherboard replacements (so support is good but I think they also don't know how to fix it). The computer is now back from yet another repair and so far so good. Let's see how long it will run without overheating this time. The XPS is too expensive to dump after only 1 year but I have a feeling the Dell tried to make a thin laptop competing with Apple without asking Apple how to cool such thin laptops.

"Hello, We have an update from our team. Unfortunately we would not be able to replace the system. However, our team has collected another system for a capture and are working on it to identify the root cause of the issue. We would not have estimated date as to when the solution would available."

Here is how Dell is providing "support" on this issue. What does this even mean? capture what?  I'm just so disappointed right now. Anyone looking to buy a XPS, please reconsider unless you want to deal with this mess.

I've the same issue,

My processor temperature rises 100 C for brief moments,
It is very frustrating, I come from a macbook pro late 2014 and it is more stable than the XPS of 2021

Is there any solution to this?

There are probably thousands of Dell XPS laptops with this problem. Returning them would incur a major loss for Dell. I submitted my data logs to Dell for review including a 1 hr stress test which generated a spreadsheet with 1822 lines of data with 204 columns of data variables.

While doing a file search in windows explorer my CPU temp went up to 100C!

I just wanted to support your report with my own case. On XPS 13 9310's good review, I bought mine earlier in the year, and ever since, the computer would get burning hot while "asleep"! The overheating occurs frequently, almost every other week for me. When it happens, I estimate the computer bottom side is at a temperature of about 60~70 deg. C, or 140~160 deg. F, hot to the touch, almost like the dash temperature in a sitting car under the Arizona sun.

It happened again yesterday. I went out for a short trip around 9:30am, leaving the computer on the breakfast table, and returned around 1:30pm. As I took up the computer to make room for lunch, it was so hot that I almost dropped it! I was certain that the computer must have died. Luckily, it restarted after cooling down.

As so many people have reported on this problem, and everyone is reporting the same recurring overheating issue, it should not be very difficult for Dell to re-create the overheating in the lab. I am looking for them to come up with a countermeasure and roll it out to the computers in the field to fix the problem.

It would also be nice to hear from Dell a progress report, so that we understand where they are in fixing this problem. Has Dell established a case for this issue? Have they recreated the problem? Is it a hardware issue or a software issue?

Thank you so much for this exact review.  This model appeals to me and I think I was looking for every reason to ignore the warnings from so many.  I am looking at a new start up myself.  Your review will end my journey with Dell.  I owe you a beer.  Good luck with the new company.  Cheers
