XPS 13 9360, LCD failure or another driver update?

I have had a few problems with this out of warranty laptop over the last 2 years. Last time it was luckily still in warranty, so the support guys managed to uninstall the bad driver that had automatically installed itself and prevented the screen from displaying properly. Since then I turned off automatic updates.

I was aware of Windows update it wanted to install recently which I have been delaying because I really needed my laptop for work and didn't want to risk the update breaking something like it has done previously. Today I was using it quite happily, put it to one side for 5 minutes, when I came back to it the screen was black. Used the power key - nothing. Plugged it in and used the power key - lights behind the keyboard came on, but then turned off again.  I noticed that the front light was flashing twice amber and 7 times white. The fan is audible for about 2 seconds then stops, as if it can't continue to boot up.

Does anyone know if this really does mean LED failure, as these article suggests? Or given the history, could it be related to another update messing up the screen drivers? As I am out of warranty I will need to pay for a repair or buy a new one.

Thanks for any advice,

same exact problem, down to the fact that it happened last year while still under warranty

Lucky you! Dell are quoting me £508 to replace the screen and refusing to accept there is a quality issue because it's out of warranty and that is that. On a laptop that is in perfect condition and less than 3 years old.
