XPS 13-9380, acpi.sys, 25% to 50% cpu usage
I recently bought an XPS 13 9380 with i7, 16G of ram, 500G of storage.
Sometimes the fans are generating huge noises so I checked the Task Manager and found that the System process is taking around 25% to 50% of CPU Usage. I used Process Explorer to check threads in System process and found that acpi.sys is taking really huge CPU Usage. This issue may not happen right after booting up but would happen after some time. I am still not clear about what triggers this issue. I tried to do a full-disk scan using Windows Defender while no virus is found. The Operation System is Win10 Pro.
This issue is seriously affecting battery life and performance on my computer. Does anyone have any idea about how to solve this issue? Might it be caused by bugs in XPS's drivers?

I am also still experiencing the issue. Almost every time I've been disconnected from peripherals and reconnect again. I have not investigated exactly which device causes it but the devices I plug in are:
Only remedy is hibernate or reboot.

I have the same problem with my XPS 13-9380 acpi.sys running under system process using 30% CPU
This has been happening to me for months but I haven't had time to investigate. Many people are reporting the issue, what are you doing to fix it?

No luck here, just applied the latest bios update but my machine is running loudly, with System consistently consuming > 30% CPU time, as others mentioned.
It is driving me crazy and makes the laptop quite unusable (too hot, loud, ...)

Hi ikke42,
Thanks for posting. Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

Just a few questions for all.
Has anyone tried to remove the battery to see if it makes a difference???
XPS 13-9380 comes with the newer "SMART" battery technology.
It uses the SMbus to communicate with the system.
It may include but is not limited to battery type, model number, manufacturer, characteristics, charge/discharge rate, predicted remaining capacity, an almost-discharged alarm so that the PC or other devices can shut down gracefully, and temperature and voltage to provide safe fast-charging.
The driver for the SMbus is the "Intel-Chipset-Device Driver"
https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=kk6c2&oscode=wt64a&productcode=xps-13-9380-laptop
Every time the battery needs to charge it sends a request to the system.
Every request adds to the CPU usage increasing.
I do not have a laptop with a "SMART" battery system yet so this is still just R&D for me.
Any input would be helpful.
Best regards,
U2

XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 has the same problem The ' System' process sometimes uses up 1 of 12 cores. It often happens when the pc has a light load. I used procexp and found acpi.sys is the problem.

Also has anyone tried this???
Go to "Device Manager"
Click on "Batteries"
Then uninstall "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery"
REBOOT:

Hi all,
I think I have SOLVED the problem in my case, and am wandering if it would also help other people.
Since it seems power-management related I looked through the BIOS to see if I couldn't find anything, and ended up unchecking (disabling) the following option:
'Power Management' > 'USB Wake Support' > 'Wake on Dell USB-C Dock'
I don't mind the extra button press (which then logs me in anyway).
After 1,5 day of work, running from meeting to meeting while docking in between and using it when back home, I had no problems from acpi.
My assumption is that as soon as you use a USB-C device (to connect to projector, or dock or ...) somehow a tight loop in the acpi.sys starts to poll or something.
If you try this out, please post the results to this thread so we can follow up.

Hello All,
I've got the exact same problem on my XPS 13-9380.
I just disabled 'Power Management' > 'USB Wake Support' > 'Wake on Dell USB-C Dock' in the bios. For the moment, everything seems good. I will keep you posted
