XPS 15 7590, Memory Integrity on causes an inaccessible boot device

Hey all,

Just wanted to report a minor bug with a fresh install on Windows 11 22H2 on XPS 15 7590.

When trying to turn on Memory Integrity under Device Security / Core Isolation, upon next reboot i get a blue screen with Inaccessible Boot Device.

Yes, I'm using the latest Intel Chipset Drivers and XPS 15 7590 firmware.

Yes my Windows 11 is up to date.

Chris

Please just level with me. Is my $3,500 Dell XPS 15 7590  going to be a nice paper weight after Windows 10 reaches its end of life unless someone sends in their XPS 7590 that still has the original warranty from 3 years ago?

Dell seriously doesn't have one of these models in its possession? Dell really cannot find a solution to this issue? Dell has to have this model to examine when its affecting other models as well? Clearly someone at Dell has the capability to find a solution.

Please. Just tell us what the anticipated outcome is.

* Even after Windows 10 EOL October 14, 2025 any PC running Windows 10 will function just fine. There just won't be anymore updates from Microsoft. So no, not a paper weight.

Dell seriously doesn't have one of these models in its possession?
* They do. They said that they could not replicate the issue. They then asked for captures.

Dell really cannot find a solution to this issue?
* That is why they want a capture.

Dell has to have this model to examine when its affecting other models as well?
* Yes, for this thread. The other model threads have to initiate the same process using the GHN agents from those threads with different platform team.

Hi @DELL-Chris M

In reply on your answer to the question:

That is really strange as it happens with totally fresh installed systems as well and not only with several Dell systems but also from other brands with the same BIOS setup.

Hi @DELL-Chris M

Still, it is strange that the specialists can't reproduce this broad issue in several models, all info available on this and other threads is here. Even other brands have this issue also with this same BIOS setup. Concluding that it is a generic problem. So my personal question would be why is the specialist not able to reproduce this? I think I must stay away from trying to answer this.

I'm also curious about this, with so many people facing this issue it seems strange that nobody is able to reproduce it please leep us posted as I sadly think there will be no XPS7590 still under warranty around as the machine is 3 years old....

thanks!

would be great if virtualization still worked in Windows 11 however...

Dell XPS 7590 was my third XPS laptop, but I am pretty sure is my last product from Dell.

I have a 7590 with this issue which is in warranty until August 2023. However I'm travelling with it at the moment so can't send it in for a month or so. From your 27th January update though you are suggesting that they no longer want to capture a system, is that correct, and the only option even for those of us under warranty is to try the workaround and *hope* it works?

After 3 years, i finally decided to reset my trusted XPS 15 7590 that I mainly use to run my business. After a few hours everything was installed again and updating to 22H2 worked. It was until I installed Docker desktop that I got the Inaccessible Boot Device BSOD at boot. Nothing helped; I tried startup fix, repair, etc. and ended up resetting my laptop AGAIN in order to use it today for work. It is deeply troubling that such a severe error is dismissed by Dell like this.

Please get it fixed to prevent others from getting the same error and wasting hours of their workday.

I have finally got Windows 11 22H2 installed on my XPS 15 7590.  The steps were:

1) Have the Infrastructure team take me out of the policy group that enforces Bitlocker. (This may not be necessary for your scenario)
2) Open Bitlocker Drive Encryption control panel and "Turn off Bitlocker"
3) Reboot into BIOS and uncheck "Enable VT for Direct I/O" (this must not be enabled)
4) Boot back into Windows 11
5) Run the Windows 11 22H2 installer.  Windows will install it and reboot several times.
6) This takes over 1.5 hours for me, but once complete Windows 11 22H2 should now be installed.
7) Install all available Windows 11 22H2 cumulative updates, and all other updates that have now appeared following the 22H2 installation
Open Bitlocker Drive Encryption control panel and "Turn on Bitlocker", and back up the Bitlocker Recovery Key
9) Infrastructure team add my laptop back into the Bitlocker Enforcement policy group. (This may not be necessary for your scenario)

Note:  If I enable "VT for Direct I/O" after this the laptop will not boot.  I see a Blue Screen of Death with the error INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.  Disabling "VT for Direct I/O" allows the laptop to boot again.

Note 2: Core Isolation > Memory Integrity was already OFF.

It seems that the "VT for Direct I/O" feature is directly responsible for Windows 11 22H2 not installing.  If it is enabled the boot device becomes inaccessible on reboot during the Windows 11 22H2 installation process, or after it is installed.

Thanks to  @sheps89 for confirming it would work.  This is my work laptop and I can't be without it, so it was was invaluable.to know there was a solution close to hand.

Hello @Lozula ,

I think that you can still send your laptop for capture to make Dell investigate the issue. If you could do it it would be truly great for everybody!

@DELL-Chris M  am I right that Dell is still open to eventually capture Lozula xps as it's still under warranty ?

Thanks!
