XPS 15 9560 BIOS update 1.8.1 - Warning
There is some mysterious BIOS update 1.8.1 from Dell. It's possible that after installing it you don't have boot device anymore. And even after BIOS downgrade(s) boot device will not appear. Only solution - changing SATA setting from RAID to AHCI. Whatever reason this BIOS update already removed from SupportAssist but still available at downloads.

I struggled to believe that a BIOS update would be released that left you with an unbootable device.
Confidence fading in Dell.
The change to BIOS settings AHCI fixed the reboot / hardware scan fail, for me:
F2 while rebooting, to enter BIOS settings, then Change the SATA mode to AHCI (from RAID) , save, reboot.
but seem to have lost some other BIOS settings in this update too ... eg thunderbolt charge rate.

Dell,
Please explain what is going on here. Why is this happening to so many people? If this occurs and it requires changing the SATA Operation mode from RAID to AHCI, what do we do with the Intel Rapid Restore Technology drivers?

Same problem, same solution. That this update was pushed to me through a Windows 10 notification several days after this problem was first discovered reflects very badly on Dell.

But I have something to say to Dell (This was not the first update error produced by the): After more than 10 years Apple, I decided to switch back to Windows 6 months ago. Unfortunately I made a huge mistake, I thought Dell would be a premium manufacturer. Argh ... I was such an **bleep**.
But I have learned from my mistakes: NEVER AGAIN DELL!!!

This has happened to be on both recent BIOS updates, the last time was back in Jan. Have DELL had anything to say on this matter? Seems a bit odd.

I had the same problem with the last 2 BIOS upgrades on an XPS 15 9560. Both times this solution worked for me but the risk that this will happen again and the solution won't work is a little too high. I use this laptop for my work and getting cold sweat when I think about re-installing everything from scratch...
I'm ignoring BIOS upgrades from Dell from now on and will hopefully survive for a couple of years with the current version.
I would also like to say "Never a Dell again' but I need a windows laptop for development and I'm not sure if there is anything better out there... I had many windows machines of the years and there seems to be nothing that comes even remotely close to a Mac with regards to overall quality.
Dell is certainly far behind! Just laughing again at the Dell Support Assist that is crashing daily. What a joke.
Hoping to move development to my Mac some day...
