XPS 15 9570, UP2716D, connection help
Trying to connect a new external monitor (Dell UP2716D) to my XPS 15 9570 laptop.
I have connected the USB-to-USB cable from the monitor to the laptop.
But I cannot connect the Mini Display Port/Display Port cable - there is no mDP connection on the XPS 15.
Getting an error on the monitor: "No HDMI / MHL2 Cable"
Do I actually need a Display Port connection? Can I just use an HDMI-to-HDMI 2.0 cable between the monitor and the laptop? I don't need a docking station, do I?
Any input appreciated!

The display supports QHD resolution, so any of these cables will work:
- An HDMI 1.4 or better cable
- A USB-C to DisplayPort cable
- A USB-C to Mini-DisplayPort cable
One advantage to going with one of the USB-C options is that since the display also includes a DisplayPort output for daisy-chaining, if you ever wanted to add a second display, you could drive both displays from that single USB-C port on your system, because you'd attach Display #2 to your existing Display #1. But daisy-chaining only works when you use native DisplayPort along the entire chain. HDMI can't be used anywhere. But if you're only using a single display for now, then any of the above cable options will perform identically to each other.
And then obviously you need to set the display to use correct input based on the cable connection you selected, which is why you're seeing that error.
No docking station required if you don't want to use one. But if you do want one, your options are limited with the XPS 15 because of its high power requirements. Docking stations would attach via the USB-C/TB3 port, but the XPS 15 is designed for a 130W power source and the USB Power Delivery spec officially only goes up to 130W. However, Dell has done something proprietary to stretch that out to 130W on some of its docks. So if you wanted to go that route at some point, your best options would be either the WD19 dock with a 180W adapter (not the 130W option) or the WD19TB, the latter of which comes standard with a 180W adapter. The main difference between the two is that the former uses regular USB-C and the latter uses Thunderbolt 3, and therefore the former when used with the XPS 15 9570 can only handle dual displays up to 1920x1200 or a single display up to 2560x1600, whereas the latter can handle dual displays up to 4K 60 Hz and even some triple display configurations. The reason is that Thunderbolt 3 allows the dock to access 4x more display bandwidth than is available over USB-C when used in a docking station setup. Good luck!
