XPS15 Office, excel and other issues fixed! (Large data crashes, freezes and more)
Hi all,
For about 1.5 years we own a lot of Dell XPS 15 laptops in the company. Data processing plays an important daily role, however nearly all the XPS 15 laptops are crashing continously on large datasets.
Using all the update tools, Dell support etc doesn't fix anything. Eventually they give up and tell it's the issue of Microsoft...Well it's not. Here is why and how to fix it:
You need to install the latest Intel graphics driver manually (Windows 10): right click on the Windows button -> Device manager -> Display adapters -> right click on the one from Intel -> update driver -> browse your computer (of course download the latest driver from the Intel website first (zip version)).
How is this a Dell issue? Intel provides standard drivers for their hardware, however Dell makes their own adjustments to these drivers and that's where it goes wrong. These Dell adjusted drivers are full of bugs, causing crashes among other strange issues. Auto update and other driver tools don't help as they only install drivers as approved by Dell, the adjusted ones!
Manually installing the lastest, standard, clean intel graphic driver fixes every microsoft office and other problems with the laptop...Why Dell support doesn't know or chooses to ignore this I don't know. It's ridiculous for a high-end expensive laptop, so I hope this thread at least helps those in desperate need of support with these issues.
Good luck!

Hi PBreuer
Which driver version did you use?
The latest versions are DCH and Intel does not recommend installing them as you say.

Dear Renx,
Currently I'm indeed running the Windows 10 DCH drivers, version 25.20.100.6618.
If you can point me towards that statement from Intel that would be great. Dell simply seems to not let me install it any other way, other than to force it as described in a manual fashion.
The driver as installed by Dell won't even let me handle 2000 data points. I tried all the suggestions posted online (lots of different settings etc) but none of them work. With the DCH driver I'm able to analyze > 2 million data points, without any issues...Updating the driver to a DCH driver also fixed a lot of random crashes, bluescreens and other windows office issues outside of excel encountered by multiple of my colleagues.
I don't know what's wrong with the standard Dell Intel driver, but it's not working as intended at all. Dell puts the blame on Microsoft and isn't able to help, something which in my view is unacceptable for their high-end laptop series. If you know your intel driver is bugged at least provide a fix instead of playing dumb...
No hard feelings towards you ofcource kind stranger! If you happen to know any other way I'm happy to hear it.
