Dell Optiplex 7040 no post, fans looping.


Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Optiplex 7040 MT with the following specs:

  • Intel i5-6500

  • 12GB DDR4 RAM (one 4GB stick and one 8GB stick)

  • Added MSI GeForce GT 730 2GB DDR3 GPU

About eight months ago, my system started shutting down under stress and sometimes failing to restart. After removing the GPU, it worked again, but performance dropped significantly in graphics-heavy tasks, which was expected. I suspected the power supply was the issue, as it hadn’t been replaced in over seven years and likely couldn’t provide enough wattage under load.

I replaced the power supply with the same model as the original, but now the system exhibits the following behavior even without the GPU installed: the fans spin for a few seconds, then stop, and this cycle repeats endlessly. There is no POST, no display, nothing.

If I reinstall the GPU, the same behavior occurs.

I’m looking for advice on what could be causing this and how to fix it.

@anne_droid​ It doesnt even post like I dont get display how im I suppoed to do the "hardware diagnostic report"? Is there another way?

cpu cooler fan cycle on and off is sign of cmos corruption.  replace cmos battery w a new cr2032 and clear cmos by mobo jumper.  if no change, mobo is bad.

Good point, I just thought that in the 8 months since the problems began you may have run a diagnostic, hence the question, rather than an instruction.

Otherwise remove all the internal and external components that you can, leaving only the CPU essentially.

Power on, and see if there is a difference.  IE: In that the fan runs for a longer time.

If so, add in the RAM, if not then it is likely a Main Board problem and terminal.

Then continue with other components..........

If in doubt please ask.

I run diagnostics regularly, and they always report that nothing is wrong. After replacing the CMOS battery, the system now boots normally. However, I’m still experiencing the same issue: the PC shuts down under stress when the GPU is installed.

I’ve already replaced the PSU, and I know the GPU itself isn’t the problem—I tested it in another system under heavy load and it worked fine. The GPU also isn’t overheating in the Optiplex 7040.

What could be causing this problem now?

Hi

Historically, failing under heavy load could be a failed capacitor on the main board, as their function is to store a charge, and release it when the CPU is under heavy load.

A capacitor with a domed/split top can be deemed to be popped, failed.

Please research the possibility, and discount it, if it doesn't fit your criteria, I am assuming the GPU is satisfactory.

So, if I measure the capacitance of the capacitors with a multimeter, should I replace the ones that read too low? Is the problem likely caused by the capacitors?

My GPU works perfectly fine in another system, and the crashes happen even under light load—around 20%–30% usage—not just under heavy load. Based on what I’ve tested, the problem seems to be the motherboard because:

  • GPU works fine in another system.

  • RAM has been tested thoroughly—swapping sticks, testing individually, running multiple memory tests.

  • CPU works perfectly fine (it never causes shutdowns when the GPU isn’t in use).

  • NVMe drive works fine—I even tried booting from another drive with Windows 10, and the problem persisted.

  • The power supply was replaced with the same genuine unit.

After all these tests, the issue appears to be directly related to the motherboard.
