Go to SolutionX51 R2, CPU install help
Hi All,
I am about to change cpu on my X51 R2. I have purchased an i7-4790s - so does it fit straight in (I am sure I have researched enough) but just making sure. Also when fitted, will I just be able to effectively switch machine on and go?

Depends on which motherboard you have.
Dell Alienware X51 R2 Intel LGA 1150 Motherboard

These I believe are fine. The S models are low power versions 65W which is desired vs 4790K which uses 88W.

Hello, Thank you for the reply. I know it physically fits but not sure if it works correctly. I was under the impression the S models are no different just draw a lower power of 64w over the original 85w. Which is good for me as I only have a 240w power supply. I did look on another page and it states the S models were validated for use. But thought id ask on here. Thank you Jack5756

Thanks for reply - i have that motherboard. Why is only some models listed. i7-4790 & 4790k listed but not S? Am i being thick here - is it the same processor just a lower wattage?5765

the S model i am referring to is also a 4th GEN - it just wasn't a standard model - i think this is what I'm finding.

Hi
Still asking for this and would like a yes or no preferably.
Will a i7-4790s work? I've purchased this for power saving.
Currently running an i3-4150, 3.5ghz, 8gb RAM.
I know the 4790 and 4790k are compatible so surely the S will be?

Dell cannot answer that conjecture. The retail i7-4790s CPU was NEVER tested/validated by Dell on the 2013 X51 R2. All you can do is test one.

Won't post doubles anymore! I will try it later im hoping as its exactly the same just a lower voltage that i dont run into issues.

if the CPU is on the list it will fit , Are you asking physically fit or fits and works correctly.(latter I bet)
your spec page clearly stated (read it yet) super clear to me. GEN 4 intel works only.
question 2, simply just turn it on,
well no. (yes if lucky , luck happens)
needs top brand heat sink grease "Shin Etsu best, and rated for 88watts that heat sink if not correct now.
fan plugged back in.
then upgrade BIOS can help if really old BIOS upgrade it. now 1st.
then after CPU swap , inside bios do reset bios to defaults.
just did a OptiPlex this week. gen 4 same.
