I have a 2014 X51 R2 with the i3 3.5ghz processor, 6gb RAM, windows 64 bit.

I am trying to do a few cheap upgrades to play a few games i like to play - nothing too intensive but needs an extra kick (im not a serious gamer - i like the freedom of PC though) Ive upgraded the graphics card to a 960 GTX (just)

The problem I'm having is although i don't need it I have installed 2 x 8gb ram sticks, corsair vengeance 1600mhz, but the slots only recognise 4gb in each - even if i remove a stick it still doesn't recognise 8gb, this is probably something simple.
