17 R4, BIOS 1.18.0 bug

Hi,

Since updating my Alienware 17 R4 to BIOS version 1.18.0 (16 May 2022), I getting followed error in my Linux =

DMAR: [Firmware Bug]: No firmware reserved region can cover this RMRR [0x000000003b800000-0x000000003fffffff], contact BIOS vendor for fixes
DMAR: [Firmware Bug]: Your BIOS is broken; bad RMRR [0x000000003b800000-0x000000003fffffff]

It makes boot time up to 2 minutes more than on version 1.17.0.

Question to Dell's employees, what you trying to do?

And second one, when you will fix it?

Regards,
TM

Hi @bacaTM welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

This forum is not Dell Support and the old Alienware 17 R4 has no Dell warranty.

The Alienware 17 R4 Drivers & Downloads are specifically for Windows 10, 64-bit, there is no support for Linux. BIOS versions should not be updated if there are no additional features for your system. BIOS version 1.18.0 was released on 16 May 2022. Alienware 15 R3/17 R4 System BIOS | Driver Details | Dell US. Perhaps installing BIOS version 1.18.0 again might fix your Linux boot time problem, or make it worse? There is no option to install an Old BIOS version. Perhaps waiting for the next BIOS version update is prudent?

    Hi crimson,

I saw on this forum dell's employees sometimes.

Fortunately, after removing a few parts from this laptop, everything is fine with it. Of course except BIOS.
"Problem" is not only with this one BIOS installed on exactly this laptop. Is the same "problem" with the rest devices produced by dell too. From functional point of view problem is what this BIOS trying to do in specific configurations and what it doing in the rest of configurations.

Personally I think that dell can be good example/side in the case.

BTW, it is good that you mentioned warranty here

    Regards

PS. If it is not dell's forum at dell.com domain so where I should will send technical report about this BIOS? Everywhere?

Hi @bacaTM thank you for sharing update.

If under Dell warranty, your opening post should include the @link to the user that works for Dell or Contact Technical Support or Get Help Now, etc.

If not under Dell warranty, you can pay Dell to roll back to an Old BIOS version or install a compatible BIOS version from a different PC: use How to Arrange an Out of Warranty Repair on Your Dell Computer | Dell US.

But Alienware 17 R4 Drivers & Downloads do not support Linux and a modified BIOS version might be offered by a user.
